I'm not surprised at all.  Indy is a great city for a convention like GenCon.  There are numerous hotels and restaurants within walking distance of the convention center which is a big draw.  Crime rate is lower than most other cities with comparable population.  And the temperature in Indy during the convention is rather pleasant.

Now lets compare the same points above with Dallas, which is a major convention city.  Lots of hotels and restaurants in Dallas, but only a few within walking distance to the major convention centers.  The crime rate in Dallas is abso-frickin-lutely awful (getting better though   ).  And due to the heat and humidity in Dallas in August, the gamer funk would be staggeringly unbearable.  

Cant say much about other large cities but Atlanta already has DragonCon which is a week or so before GenCon.  I know it technically isnt a gaming convention but with it's sci-fi/fantasy roots I would expect quite a bit of gaming going on there.  And it draws even larger crowds than GenCon does.     I dont think Atlanta could support two conventions back to back like that though?

Frankly, I would like to see GenCon in Denver, Colorado.  Great location.  But other than that it is just another city.

again, its all about money at the top. i would just love to run something like GenCon...really i would. none of this board of directors crap. have it run well, lots of common sense and make it what it should be. then everyone gets paid, everyone enjoys themselves and next time, its more of the same.

That OCE with a clam shell box mentioned in the Interesting Items thread got me thinking, I'm surprised no one has created a clear plastic clamshell for these and other types of boxes. Oh well just thinking out loud.

WOTC were really in a no win situation on this one, as I've mentioned before.  Don't show up, and you get labeled the bad guy and thousands of gamers spend their money elsewhere, plus your new game system gets no buzz.  Do show up, and you are supporting the company that still owes you half a million dollars. I hope Gencon gets this crap sorted out sooner rather than later. But either way good to finally get confirmation on that.
