Well, I do admit in retrospect I was being overly wishful, and some of the assumptions and logic I used were faulty at best. Now that I am actively selling again after a long voluntary absence, after getting a two-year (for now) business degree and learning things I REALLY wish I knew before, this is one tactic I will steer clear from unless the demand is clearly there. Having caught lightning in a bottle in 2014, I set some of my expectations TOO high.

With my admission of past naive errant judgment out of the way, I will note for record, in my defense:

(1.) I had previously sold the DMG First Print in similar condition in 2014 for about $50, so I thought (wrongly) I could set the bar lower, but not nearly as low as it should have been. Nevertheless, I did have a personal sales precedent.

(2.) My eBay page was originally meant to be an experiment, because at the time (2014) I was in danger of being laid off, so I needed to weigh my options if the worst case scenario did happen, and try ventures I'd never done before. Not at any point did I EVER feel delusional about being better than the big sellers or hobbyists. After all, my personal playing experience is limited to Moldvay/Cook B/X, Mentzner BEC (no M and I!), 1st Edition Advanced D&D (my favorite) and a brief foray with 2nd Ed AD&D till I realized it simply wasn't the same as the other editions I played. I was often a DM, albeit a way underaged and easily manipulated one. Long story short before this carries on: I am still very much a neophyte at this eBaying, I did the eBay experiment, succeeded far past expectations and getting some seriously crazy winning bids ($139.99 for a Cthulhu Deities & Demigods, for example), kept the experiment going after the initial planned end on 05/31/2014, got many returning customers, and then . . . got laid off in the third round of layoffs after 21 years of working for the same employer. Was completely devastated, wrote a novel to pull myself together, gradually stopped eBaying, and went to college, graduated from college, dropped in and legitimately browsed this forum for the first time (having previously peeped around once or twice), and find my old sale being in the spotlight. I'm not mad, just perplexed since my "silliest auction price" is a minuscule drop in the bucket compared to the other stuff on this thread. The corrections were made, and the item sold. Positive feedback was exchanged.

(3.) I try to be as honest as possible in my business dealings. If I do not know the information offhand, I will look it up and give credit where credit is due. As a result, I have in the past had knowledgeable people buying things at crazy prices. If buyer and seller agree about the crazy price with full knowledge and good intent, then that ultimately is the business of the buyer and seller. Unlike the crazy-price stuff that did NOT sell, giving the MST3K treatment on a gradually successful, soundly revised sale rings hollow. It's like Joel and the Bots making fun of a bad thirty-second pawn-shop commercial instead of making fun of "Manos: The Hands of Fate." As a matter of fact, lampooning people who made a good-faith deal for thousands when it should have sold for tens reeks of latent jealousy since neither buyer nor seller were being duped or treated in otherwise less than reputable fashion. (Unless of course it was an inside-job money-laundering deal? Ah, the implications . . . )

(4.) Frank, it seems like you had a good-sized bone to pick with me when you posted this in 2016. While I hope that is no longer the case, and I certainly forgive you (and hopefully I can be forgiven for whatever else I may have done after the regrettable name-dropping incident early on), is it really worth comparing a $40 First-Print DMG that finally sold for about $16, to some of these people who want hundreds or thousands of dollars for their even more common items? It's more of a rookie mistake than it is a malicious deceptive price-gouging monstrosity (or possibly a money-laundering scheme?) Anyhow, message me sometime if you think I'm out of line with my pricing. That also goes for anyone else on this forum who might be reading this Necropost. Hello Pauly, welcome to The Acaeum.

You shouldn't have any worries on this topic. Sometimes people become concerned, or defensive, if their listings show up on the "New Candidate: Silliest Auction Price of the Year". It's really not meant to be an admonishment of the seller, although sometimes it is for repeat or deliberate offenders, but more of topic for light conversation about intentionally, or unintentionally silly auctions on eBay. It's also raises awareness to what the opinions are of fellow members in regard to auction selling prices. Occasionally we even see that pricing for some auction items might not be all that silly.

Often these "silly" auctions are corrected as a result of Acaeum members contacting eBay sellers or the seller discovering their auction items made it to this thread. So, this thread offers some light amusement, possibly some irritation for others, while also contributing to price awareness in the collecting community.

There are some that have been victims of unscrupulous sellers, who are trying to snag an unwitting newbie into purchasing an item for way more than prevailing market conditions. This is downright deceitful and unscrupulous behavior, and those sellers will eventually find themselves ostracized from the greater collecting community, if they don't correct their behavior.

If you haven't had the opportunity to check out other topics on The Acaeum, please do. Another similar light thread to this one is "Laughable item descriptions".

We also have positive threads, such as "Private Sales and Sellers" and "BRAGGING RITES - Show us yer pics!"

Other examples of topics, meant to assist members in who to avoid, are "e-Bay sellers you should avoid" and "Report sellers who infringe copyrights!".

There are MANY members here who set prices that are quite ridiculous, both off and on eBay, and some abuse the literal and unspoken site rules as well. Some are not above posting information about sales and auctions in forums other than Classifieds, for example.
Personally, I don't think posting a beat-up 1st print DMG for $40 makes it a candidate for this thread. It's really geared more towards things like Lordan's gem, which has already been posted four times at the low low price of $2k without a bid.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

yeah, sorry I missed this one. Seriously, your auction didn't merit being in our "silliest" thread. I post in here from time to time, but I think I'm only doing it to be funny on egregious stuff. An old DMG for $40 doesn't rise to that level. Heck, I've even bought a few DMGs or PHBs for that price !

I hope your first interaction here doesn't taint your view of the forum.

Wow, that's um yeah. Sold for full price - holy moly!

You know, to some people it's just money. You have a great job or a successful business, you don't have a lot of time to look around for a deal. It's not about setting a precedent, or did I pay too much? It's "that's what I want and I have the money, boom - done"
It was a long time ago, but any of you remember when supposedly Shaquille O'Neal bought a fairly rare (but not extremely rare) Nintendo Game on eBay and paid 10 times what it was going for at the time. The funny part was that for quite a while after, every seller on there was trying to get that same amount for the game and it took a while for them to realize nobody else was throwing down like that for it.
