Your generosity is noted, misterspock. That was highly illogical of you! Sorry, that was sad wasn't it?!  :)

Thanks for making this happens, y'all! I think it's a great idea.

Can someone tell us why the number of prints to be made, cannot be raised to 60, or 70, or 75, or even up to 100 copies?
I do no understand why the number FIFTY has so much importance and significance....

The point of this enterprise (from what I gathered) was always to obtain a limited number of prints for Acaeum members, but what is the big difference from 50 copies to 100.....?
Especially since so many members here want a copy and are sitting on a waiting list that will never mature for them.
I honestly think that folks who decide to back out will be VERY few as long as the costs remain as stated above.

With the waiting list and the folks who want TWO copies at the least 75 copies could be assigned immediately.

Because then the question becomes "Why can't we have 150 copies?". And then the question becomes "Why can't we have 200 copies?". And then the question becomes "Why can't we have 500 copies?". You get the drift. Then the question becomes "Since we now have 150 copies, why can't we each get three copies?".  Then the question becomes "Since we now have 200 copies, why can't we each get five copies?".  Again you get the idea.  50 copies limits the amount to people who really want the item, as well as ending any speculation/investment opportunities.  By continually raising the amount, the project loses both credibility and collectibility.

The danger of over reaching:  What if 100 copies was ok'd, and despite pre-orders and waiting lists, we are 20 short at the end? Somebody has to come up with the money to cover those. Then you are back to letting buyers have mulitple copies, which is what we are trying to get away from.

Remember also the scope of this project.  Every 50/100/200 copies added to the amount we are going to do, these add to the project cost; they are that many more Erol has to sign, that many more that have to be shipped (and we may be stuck doing the shipping ourselves, we don't know yet).  Each extra copy is one more that might have a problem in transit, or get lost, or damaged, etc.  The committee feels it's better to start out small and build; think of this as a test run for (hopefully) future endeavors in this vein.

How about limit it to pre-orders.  If you pay by a certain date (like April 1st) you get one.  Limit to one each and everybody who has the cash gets one :)

Mike brings up another good issue. Somebody will have to do the packaging and shipping and depending on the buyers location shipping costs will vary.
That has to be factored in with some sort of compensation for the person(s) who will be doing the work.

I agree with Mike as to why there should only be 50 (for this project).  I want to keep the speculators out of the project.  Also, if we pull this off, and word gets out, we may indeed be able to do 75 prints next time with no trouble at all (well you know what I mean).  If this project goes well and word of mouth spreads this may become a recruitment drive for the Acaeum.

A possible suggestion . . . .

If you are concerned about overprinting your sales, you might look at going with posters, rather than giclees. They can still be limited, signed, and numbered, but are much less expensive to print. We used printpelican.com for the 18x24 IlluXCon posters at the suggestion of a couple of artists, and they did a terrific job - the paper is only 100# gloss stock, but the color reproduction was fabulous (often a big problem reproducing artwork).

350 posters cost us about $475 to have printed.

I agree with Badmike - you have to draw the line somewhere. I'm pretty surprised we got 50 takers for the project. It's more than I would have thought.

Right now we have 50 people on the list, and a waiting list of 1. I doubt that all 50 people currently committed will pay up; it's just the nature of things, initial enthusiasm will wane and priorities will change. So I expect Davidc will manage to get a copy.

If not, there will be other opportunities in the future. Right now the project is looking spectacularly successful; undoubtedly there will be more projects in the future using other artists.

Regarding shipping - my suggestion would be to make the cost $50, plus shipping. That way we know we can use the $2500 for the artist and print costs; when the prints are done and with the committee, each subscriber can then send the appropriate amount to cover shipping to their location. I know it will be a lot more expensive to send out here, and I shouldn't be subsidised by those living locally.

Regards

Mike

Thanks for the kind words, Mike.

Just in case people missed benjoshua's post from Friday on page 7 of this thread, or haven't read the whole thread, here's a partial repost:

benjoshua wrote:The EO Committee is currently researching several matters which might take a week or longer to determine including printing methods, shipping methods and even the artist's availability and/or interest.  There will be an additional shipping charge for overseas shipments, but it's unclear if a shipping charge will be necessary for state-side orders or how much any of that will be.

The EO Committee has decided that any money left over will be given to the Acaeum, so Scott can continue to provide an ad free site.  The committee is not interested in gouging anyone or profiteering, and we will do our best to work within our budget.

I hope this clarifies some of the questions raised.

The EO Committee is working hard to make sure this endeavour will be completed to the highest standard possible, and to keep the process transparent, but it will take time.

So keep the great ideas and suggestions flowing, add your name to the waiting list if you missed the cut-off point, and watch for the weekly updates.

Best,

PaulKM

In the case where we know a number are going to various countries, it might make more sense to assign a point man in each country who can receive their bundle and send out to others in their country.  From a price point it might save some shipping costs.

I'm late to this thread, so I missed the cut-off point.  I'd like to be added to the waiting list for 1 print.

Great idea, by the way :) !
