According to who? That statement is not provable (one way or the other). I certainly cannot say torture works - I have never performed it and I have no knowledge therein. But that does not make the opposite true, either.

And by the way. If water-boarding is out the door, I guess we will have to stop using it in training. Because we do. It is is used by the Army and I suppose the Navy uses it in Seal training, have no idea about the Air Force (but I am sure they use something similar in their E&E course).

Regardless of my opinion, the door has swung and the president has made his call. He will sign the order and that will be that - on the surface at the very least. But he has stated the government will be transparent and I, for one, will believe him.

There have been MANY studies on the effectiveness of torture, lots of which can be found on the internet.  Most if not all of them have all come to the conclusion that the only thing tortuing people does is to getting people to say things that they think that torures WANT to hear to make the torture stop.

JG-

Rightly or wrongly, I don't think the majority of Americans consider overseas attacks to matter that much.  And I doubt that most remember the WTC bombing of the 90s.

It is wrongly. Of that I am certain.

Anyway. I am the lone man defending the water-boarding of terrorists, and I am going to let it go at that.

JG is correct, that it is only a matter of time before this can turn ugly.

It doesn't really matter anyway, it's all just based on a continuouysly ticking clock.  I mean, we didn't resort to torture back in 1993 when he terrorists tried to blow up the NTC with a car bomb and yet still managed to get through the rest of Clinton's 2 terms without it happening either.

ashmire13 wrote:I only thought it would be interesting to discuss such a topical point with the anniversary approaching. There is some 'evidence' that gives an argument that it could have been staged with overlays of the area on the moon, matching that of desert areas in the US.

There is also the lighting issues, shadows, flag fluttering, lack of anything visible left behind (so far), the power needed to land and relaunch the lander, the computing power available then compared to now and the fact we haven't been back since.

All of these points can also be disproven with valid scientific answers, but as per my original post, a conspiracy theory thrives on a lack of real evidence but also the modern power of the internet makes everyone an expert to prove or disprove anything.

I just thought it might be worth a few lines to chat about, but as it appears so pointless, you may wish to ignore it and discuss the rights and wrongs of torturing people (whether innocent or not)

I for one wholeheartedly believe that we went to, and landed men on the moon.  I've read plenty of articles about why and how the U.S. could have faked the moon landings but frankly I dont believe it is even remotely possible to fake something like that and keep it from getting out to the general public.  I dont care how much money someone throws at you or how big a threat someone makes to keep you from talking....something as big as that would get out somehow.

I'm not going to go into all of the reasons why people think the moon landings were fake or attempt to debunk anything because its already been done enough by other people much more intelligent than myself.  However, you asked the question above "Why havent we gone back?"  Pretty simple answer if you ask me.  What else could we possibly gain by going back to the Moon at this juncture?  Only two things pop out at me.  1) Dark side observatory.  2) Launch pad for future interplanetary missions.  An observatory on the dark side of the moon would be fantastic but unbelievably expensive.  As for the launch pad, again....expensive.  As much money as we have spent on the ISS (somewhere in the tens of billions of dollars so far) it would cost quite a bit more to fund either of the above ventures.  With the sad state of the world economy I dont see either of these happening in my lifetime.  Nor do I see a manned mission to Mars occurring anytime soon.

A discussion like this reminds me of the movie Capricorn One where we faked the first landing on Mars.  Someone should do an update of that movie.  I would rather watch it than all of the other crappy remakes being put out these days.

I agree that the US should not adjust policy to what the rest of the world thinks, but I am very happy that the president said in his speech Tuesday night that the US will no longer torture.

And I just wanted to comment on this statement.  Since when do we take what the President says as absolute truth?  Just because the president says so doesnt necessarily mean that it will be.  Didnt George Bush state something back after 9/11 along the lines of "We will find Osama Bin Laden"?  Still waiting on that one.

And please note my distinction between terrorists and soldiers. We do not torture soldiers. I was very clear on that.

There is no cowardly tactic in war. You win or you are defeated. I would employ every dirty trick in the book to bring my men home. In fact, we train daily on how to defeat the enemy with unconventional warfare.

I agree with Paul 100%.

And again, it brings us back to the question of why just stop at waterboarding?  Why not just do all the same things I listed above?  If you really believed that you should deploy every dirty trick in the book to win, then you should have no issues with those means of torture as well.

We were basically ignoring the threat of Islamic radicalsim and they killed thousands of Americans.

It took that event to "wake" up our government. They responded and to my recollection, I haven't seen an attack on our soil since. People can disagree with the response, but the fact remains: no attacks on american soil. I am good with that.

I respectfully disagree with your correlation between torture, and another event like 9/11 happening. This (IMHO) is how George Bush got re-elected - Through Fear.

I will not be ruled or governed by Fear.

We are partially responsible for this Islamic radicalism:
- In Iraq
For 200 years Iraq has been governed by liberators. The Turks, the British, and now us. Look how they have all succeeded...

- In Iran
We backed the Shah of Iran. He was overthrown, and look at what that got us.

- In Afghanistan
We backed the mujahadin (sp?) agaisnt the Russians. They beat the Russians, becoming a military force led by Bin Laden.

Disclaimer - I am oversimplifying this, I know. But this agression against has built up over a few years.

The other side of the Isamic agression is against Israel, and/or the city of Jerusalem in hopes that everyone will kick them out of the holy city. This issue may never be resolved...

Brian, you walk away from water-boarding with all your digits.

My discussion of tactics is for the battlefield, maybe I was not clear enough on that.

I have been shot at in two wars. Whether you want to take my word for it or not, all that pc bullshit goes out the door. You do whatever it takes to win. End of story.

You can disagree and that is more than fine. In fact it is great.

Again, this discussion is worthless if you cannot distinquish between uniformed soldiers and terrorists. I have given you my point of view on each. They are not interchangable.

But torturing captives has nothing to do with being in the open battlefield.  War is hell, I don't think anyone will argue that point, but fighting for your very life in a gunfight on an open battlefield is entirely different that torturing a captive.

What is the difference between them though?  One group is sanctioned with a uniform by a goverment and the other is not.  They are all still people, human beings.

Being in a goverment issued uniform does not change that fact.  Being in a uniform does not absolve someone from being evil, nor does not being in a uniform absolve us from being good people and treating them like human beings, even if they do not feel the same way about it.  That is what is supposed to make us better then them.

Brian, we agree more than we do not.

The difference between them is that you can win a war and end the hostility against a foreign nation. This is not the case with terrorism. Therefore, different methodologies were concieved and intiatied.

We had an election and the result favored your opinion. The president has made our new policy clear. U.S. Army Interrogation Manual only (it is worthless; I can guarrantee it will not produce any actionable intelligence). That is the soon to be the policy of the land. If that is what the president has ordered, I would follow his order. I don't have to agree, but I respect the office and the decision.

I know you were not lecturing me on the value of human life. Nobody needs to do that. But apparently, the terrorists who are determined to end our way of life have not had that particular lesson.

And like you, Pruf, I spent time in. I will just say that I do not have the same reservations about torturing the enemy if it is going to save U.S. lives or that of my men.

Actually, Leon Panetta has said exactly the opposite. We won't torture anyone.....unless we have to   .  And we will only use "rendition" to countries that positively absolutely reassure us that THEY won't torture.  Yeh tell me another one

I'd be absolutely shocked if both extraordinary rendition (only in certain cases, of course) and torture (only it won't be waterboarding, they'll think of something else to avoid the stigma) don't continue under the new administration.

When you allow the terrorists to change the away you do things and alter your morals and values, they have already started to win.  Those people are barbarians and evil and we weren't before it started.  The only thing that has changed is that we have lowered ourselves to their level, not the other way around.

Truthfully though, this past election wasn't really a referendum on torture.   Rarely is any election a referendum on one issue, but if there was, this one wasn't about the use of torture. Neither McCain, nor Obama were going to continue the practice of waterboarding or other "enhanced interogation techniques" if they won.  Both made it very clear in their platforms early on that was the case.

ETA:  Whether or not you choose to beleive them or not is an entirely different story though.

He's a politcian.  You can expect that he is going to talk out of both sides of his mouth at every possible situation.  You can pretty much count on him lying through his teeth 75% of the time as well.

The past election was based on:

1) President Bush's performance in Iraq, and why we are still there, and who will be best to lead us out of Iraq (if that is truly possible anymore...)

2) The Economy

You can say it was Iraq, but notice how the media has completely shut up about it since. We were beginning to withdraw with or without change in DC.

It was all about the economy. People ultimately vote with their wallet. Bush failed to catch the economic disaster and the party paid for it. Then again, Republicans just were never solidly in McCain's corner.

They trotted out a guy who probably never had a real chance.

Want a quick way to destroy the moral of the soldier on the ground? Just keep awarding U.S. constitutional rights to the f...king pieces of shit that are shooting at our boys. Apparently someone has realized this and actually made a good decision.

I opened up a what seems intelligent dialogue with my post.  I have to admit I agree with most of what Bbarsh has said up to now.   I am glad Obama and his minions have decided to live in the "real" world and not the campaign promise Happyland so many politicians pretend to support.  I know the ACLU and progressives are dismayed by Obama's reiteration of Bush's tactics, but realistically as was said you cannot give jury trials to war combatants without gumming up the works.  I think they made the right choice here even though they will get a lot of flack by the left (and the right, who will rightly point to the massive hypocrisy here in pre-election rhetoric from Obama).  But there is a large difference in saying something to get elected and realizing when you are in office you have to do the right thing.  If Obama keeps this up he can avoid becoming Jimmy Carter II and carve his own legacy.

And to be on the record, I am against torture. Flushing a Koran, playing some rock music loud, or posing some ninnies naked for pictures isn't torture and when that gets thrown into the mix it blurs the entire picture.  Some of the crap pulled was torture, and it wasn't done to gain intelligence but to satisfy some bullshit sadistic shit.  But when some American soldiers slice off a muslim non-combatant's head and film it, I'll worrry about it a little more. Until then, frankly I don't give a damn what they do long as it gets results.

For those who say torture is always wrong....If you have a child molestor that has admitted kidnapping your kid and hiding him, he's tied to a chair in front of you, and you have the means to employ waterboarding....if you would enjoy "reasoning" with him instead of going to town on the scumbag to get your kid, you're worse than he is...you don't deserve to HAVE kids.

Upshot is I'd NEVER say I'd never do something just in case you need to do it. The slippery slope is when you keep justifying it again and again....and that's the dilemma.

This is really an apples to oranges type scenario so its really not applicable.

Beyond the fact that it's no more or less likely to get a definitive and good answer, it also has a much higher potential to find out immediately whether it was a correct answer or not, where torturing enemy captives is not ever that simple.  Also, regardless of the end payoff of either scenario, the fact is that you have made yourself the evil one in the process of doing it and resorted to the exact same type of behavior that you are decrying others for doing and TORTURING them for.  When you torture people, regardless of the "reasons", you are just like every other torturer out there.  They all had their "reasons" too, most of which I am sure that validated their behavior as well.

If somebody takes one of my kids, or any kid, I really would not be concerned with what other people think of my actions. I would torture the motherfu...r to an inch of his life and do for infinity to get my child back.
