I essentially agree with Doug; one or two boxes, but then all of the employee copies that had been squirreled away and evaded the cubicle by cubicle recall. I'd guess 125-200 copies initially survived with some (slight) reduction in that number over the years. That's my best guess, but I was there at GenCon buying the first two that sold, trading for others and buying them for $100 a pop from staffers the next year while Bracton questioned my sanity.

I actually have one of the outer-wrap cardboard boxes of the original orange B3 - got it with my SW OB3 purchase years ago... I also have written provenance from the former TSR employee that "fetched the last remaining book and box" from the trash...

~throwi

PS - I'm guessing there will be requests for pictures, I'll try to pull the box from its secret location and take a few pictures this weekend...

Ditto, though I incorporated a tidbit or two from the Green version. Still used the Orange map.

Access to the upper level is no problem. Besides the stair connection (which admittedly is off by a square or two in how it lines up), there is a trap door leading between the entrance and upper levels, two upper level balconies (visible from outside), plus a bunch of obvious upper level windows that can be climbed to.

I bet you're feeling pretty good about that purchase in retrospect, aren't you Thom? :-)

Honestly, was just happy to get the OB3, the box was a little extra bonus at the time.  ;-)

Thanks Foul for the site update,

1993 Harold Johnson interview here:  Print Run

Recollecting they went out as pre-orders and 2000 may not have been returned, not sure who is CTV?

**

CTV:  ...  Back to modules, one in particular, the first printing, the one with the tan border, module B3 Palace of the Silver Princess, was recalled and destroyed.  Would you like to talk about that?

HJ:  [laughs] No, it happened during my time as director of games, so no thank you.  I guess I'll say this about it - TSR has always been sympathetic to our retailers and our distributors.  We published that product and we were on a deadline and the first version rushed out, probably not in the shape in it should have been, with possibly objectionable things in.  When we heard that from a number of distributors and retailers, regarding their objections, we thought it would be better to pull it back, and modify it.  To identify it, the new one had a green border.

CTV:  Well, let's just say that there were some illustrations that you decided were in poor taste.

HJ:  Uh, yeah.  [laughs]

CTV:  So, it was formally distributed.  How many do you think are out there roughly?

HJ:  Well, originally we did what was called outer shipping which meant that the product was prepackaged by the printer and sent directly to the distributors and the shops, and did not come to our warehouse, so the full pre-order was shipped before we recalled it.  I would suspect that maybe 10 percent did not return their order.  Most of the rest did.

CTV:  So, there may be only 2,000 out there.

HJ:  Yes.

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

Shoulda been: ".. from Pangreenia to Floratopolis, from mystical Treeonia of spectral Forests to Schruborial dimensions." - The Forests of Leng

Someday there should be a boardgame about this. Each player represents a TSR employee trying to snag as many copies of original B3 as possible. As they move around a board which simulates the 1981 TSR offices, they retrieve & hide copies while being pursued & intercepted by scandalized TSR managers.
