All my crap is in the basement and there is a lot of it so that's probably the most practical place anyway.

That's a tough one.  Until you're ready to display, my recommendation is to store your collection in bins and keep them tucked out of the way.  Once you're ready to display, I found it easiest to make a construction reclamation project out of an unfinished attic or an unfinished basement - this way, you're not claiming existing living space and increasing the value of your home at the same time.
