Outside of local Con's going to a big Con is already a bucket list item.
NTRPGCon would be fun, but maybe not with all the masks and madness over there.
Masks & Madness, isn't that one of those cheap OSR clones?

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

It's all part of a vast conspiracy to control our destinies by controlling the stars. Elon Musk is launching hundreds of satellites that will be visible from Earth, appearing as star-like points of light. With the explosion of new writers and new products in the RPG space, brought about by the low entry level of acceptable quality that buyers will but (I can think of a few publishers that just publish sh!t), and the relative easy access people now have to high quality tools for digital publishing, and how cheap POD is, I suspect 'collecting' D&D and RPGs is something that is going to be very much harder in the future.
Identifying quality is going to come down to YouTube reviewers, personal relationships with trusted publishers, and hands on at Games Cons. One POD quality can be very different from another of the exact same item, and items actually bought from the author can be very much different to those purchased through a third party. How a 'collector' navigates that, and assembles/assimilates the information to make wise choices is going to get a lot harder going forward.

It is definitely true that there is a huge amount of new RPG material coming out now and I think that is great. Take Call of Cthulhu for example. Many new licensees are now bringing out material (not just Chaosium and Pagan Publishing anymore). Some is good and some not so. But it has always been thus for games (see also: music, books etc..) and as a gamer and collector I have to content myself with what I judge to be good quality. And it is that individual judgement which is why everyone's collection will be different and interesting. I say, let a thousand flowers bloom!*

*Always good to get a Mao quote in sometimes.

Well, I've done it now. This is my last week of paid work in the world (that I know of). I will get a severance until the end of November, but after that, no more paychecks.

Some people call this retirement, but I don't like that word or even that idea. It's too selfish and lazy sounding for one thing. I like to live life actively whether it's in the paycheck world or not. Carpe Diem! Too many people die once they "retire" because their life has lost meaning/purpose. I am hoping to continue making a difference in the world whatever I'm doing. There are several non-profits where I will volunteer more freely, for example. It's a new chapter in my life, and I hope I live it well.

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

Chris, Good luck with the next phase of your life! I have no doubt you will remain active and be a positive force in your local community (and in this community) for many years to come. Hopefully, in the not too distant future we can meet up at NTRPG or one of the other cons and roll a few dice.

Anyone see anything good for sale on ebay? I've been reading on here trying to learn some stuff and it looks like theres alot of people selling reprints, claiming to be the real first prints. As a rookie collector, I dont want to buy something fake, but I have almost $300 ebay bucks expiring on 4 Nov to spend. Figured I would use them to get something nice to start my collection.

Congrats Chris. I can only hope to see that day. One kid starting college and one 5 years from now will keep me hunting paychecks for quite some time. Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you'll be great at it.

Dude! To heck with all that helping the world stuff. If I was done working I'd game every day. I'd be a fixture at the game store, sitting in on every game I could from open till close. People would start to think I worked there. The manager would eventually have to either ask me to leave or just hire me.

Congratulations, Chris! I've been retired for almost three years now, and it has been the best time of my life since when I used to have summer vacations. It really isn't hard to find things to do and to make a difference. So far, I have co-authored and project managed the Lost Lands world book for Frog God Games, I'm project manager for three more of their projects, I started a blog, I ran several marathons and half-marathons, I've taken classes on non-profit management and wilderness first aid (I'm sure those are connected somehow), I'm treasurer of a small Chicago theater, I'm on the finance committee for an arts and business organization, and I'm finally reading some of the books that have been sitting on my shelves for years. Oh, and I've been regularly running and playing in games.

So, yeah, just keep busy. And have fun!
