I've also noticed that super clean PHB and DMG have been going to for dollar even if they are later prints.

I may be mistaken, but I think the bidding is where it's at due to the fact that it's a 1st or 2nd Print (those were the only two prints with 144pgs). Those two early prints reference Cthulhu and Melnibonean.

Scam in the making? When I first started selling in 2014, I had a KISS T-shirt from the 1996 reunion, which was a flashier version of the first KISS album cover art. I had some guy asking me if I'd take a personal check (no) and if I could deliver it through another format (I told hm I'd get back to him about it.) He and some other guy with "0" feedback ran up the bidding to $100. eBay caught on, banned the people involved, but I was stuck with a shirt that I actually lost money on, because at the time I didn't know to reclaim the $10 eBay selling fee. This coming right after my only negative feedback (a new/shrinkwrapped Judas Priest box set that supposedly had CDs that didn't play) almost made me quit eBay.

Or . . . it could be something way more boneheaded. That is obviously a non-Cthulhu print (4th or 4th+ print 1981 Face logo, bluish color) and almost every collector knows which prints have Cthulhu/Elric, and which don't. There are badly uninformed people with really deep pockets out there (think of your average boxing champion), and sellers with faulty knowledge of what they are selling.

Any way you look at it, this isn't going to end well.

I wonder if the guy just looked at solds and saw that the highest priced ones had 144 pages in the title and just used it as a keyword. If his name was in the book, you'd think he'd know better though.

Yes, he got right back with me after I messaged him and said he was going to change the listing to reflect the info I'd sent him. That's all he could do with the listing since there are already bids placed on it. An experienced seller would have cancelled the bids and started over. Being a Noob, he probably thinks that is his only option.

I have to guess that at least some of the crazy pricing you see on D&D collectibles is more honest error than intentional gouging. Very few people outside our world understand what any of this stuff is really worth. We can't even agree on that sometimes.

I can easily imagine how difficult and complicated it would be for someone who's never even played D&D, and much less thought of collecting it, to come into possession of a lot of RPG items and then trying to figure out the value of it.

The owls are not what they seem...

According to his auction, he's the original owner which is why I thought maybe 144 pages was possibly him looking at titles of solds and just assumed it would be a good keyword to use.
