Your memory lane search sent me hunting, the $4,000 remembrance you had, might have been the $4,039 I paid waaay back in Nov 2005 for a Woodgrain from Paul (which at the time seemed a terrifying amount of money!)

Ahh, that makes sense then.  When I went digging, I found this and just assumed that was the one I was (mis)remembering.

I snagged this.  Of which the seller cancelled the sale and contacted me and told me this:

"I think you have made a mistake. This listing you just bought was a dummy listing so someone could buy those modules by making a offer and the price was really high to keep people from buying it. These modules are in really bad condition they have water damage and I don't think you will be happy with your purchase"

To which I responded with this:

"Now, I'm curious. Based on the photos, I could see that the condition was not particularity great, but was interested in buying them anyway in spite of that and it was not a mistake, I've been collecting RPG related items for over 25 years now. Which is where the curiosity part comes in. If those were listed for more than what you were expecting to sell them for, what were you actually offered for them? Because if $300 was meant to be too high, someone was almost certainly not being honest with you about their actual value."

To which was met with this:
"I've been a gamer since 1981 and there extremely damaged by water. The staples are rusty. Many of the pages are stuck together some are missing pieces and some are missing maps. I'm not being scammed. They have extreme water damage."

After providing some context to my sincerity and experience in this stuff, the seller responded with this:

"I'm not questioning your credibility at all and I'm sorry if my response came off that way. I just can't wrap my head around the idea that those water damaged modules are worth very much. Be honest what do you think they are worth."

So I gave him my fairly conservative assessment:

"Without knowing exactly what is missing or the full extend of the water damage and missing maps, it is tough to tell for sure, but based on what you have listed the Lost Abbey of Calthonwey typically sells in the ~70-$80 range(there's two on here now that are listed for $120 & $130 respectively) when it comes up. I just bought a Street of Gems myself a couple of weeks ago to replace the one I sold years ago, that I was happy to get for $50(Companions stuff routinely sells for more than that, some of it a lot more than that depending on the item). The are several others on here listed now for more than that.The 3 Dungeon Quest Publications items are all exceeding rare and TBH I can't even remember seeing them come up for auction before. They would all almost certainly go for more than $50 each, assuming they are listed correctly unless they are effectively completely ruined with water damage/writing/highlighting and/or missing pages.The Beast, Men, and Gods is also really rare and like the 3 Dungeon Quest Publications items, if it's not totally ruined with water damage/writing/highlighting missing pages, etc would almost certainly go for more than $100. And I'm not even sure what the "Dice of Destiny" is, I have never seen it before and I couldn't not find any info on it doing a quick search on it. Nothing on the Acaeum forums and nothing on now old, abandoned Tomb of Treasures forum. Who is the publisher? Definitely looks like something early-mid 80's based on the artwork and would also draw interest due to it's obvious obscurity."

All of which fell on deaf ears.  Because he didn't respond and proceeded with this anyway:

Sounds like he's a bit of an idiot. Unless there's some gem in there, and he wanted to cancel the sale not out of concern for your buying experience, but because he figured he could get a lot more if he re-listed.

He should have put it up for auction instead of whatever cockamamie scheme he was doing.  If indeed he just wanted to clear some high-damage items.

Guess now that it has arrived I can admit, it's me.

Very nice copy too.  It actually has all 16 sheets too, not the 15 as stated in the listing. Really happy to pick this up, I've been looking for one after I sold my two sets(of incomplete) sheets years ago.

And I agree. Honestly, I personally don't think I've ever seen a complete copy sold before. I'm sure there has been, just I've never seen one.
