The concern over "bad" opinions presupposes the module is not real. Different opinions might encourage someone to get a good deal on it and/or prevent a reseller from getting it cheap. That is, suggesting one should stay away is equally bad if the thing turns out to be real.. Opinions cut both ways.

Sellers response seems to suggest all of this came from a new player or novice campaign. Not sure what I think of that.

Just out of curiosity, how would one know if it was a copy? What sorts of tell-tale signs would you be looking for?

I'm not that knowledgeable on the printing processes/techniques but performing a little research on the topic provides the following potential "tells".

Original TSR-era printing could have:

    Offset lithography
    Regular halftone dot grid
    Rosette patterns
    Single screening (no moiré)
    Ink absorbed into paper fibers
Slight dot gain (soft dot edges)
    Semi-gloss or glossy coated stock
    Smooth paper surface
    Muted-to-moderate color gamut
    Slight registration imperfections
Blacks not perfectly deep/neutral (slightly warm)
    Flexible paper of medium weight
    Guillotine-cut edges with minor wear
    No raised ink feel

Reproduction would likely have:

    Digital printing (not analog offset)
Halftone dots may appear rescreened or fuzzy
    Possible moiré / interference patterns
Halftone dots made of smaller dots (dot-within-dot)
    Loss of fine micro-detail
    Ink/toner sits on the surface
    Very sharp dot edges
    Bright white or modern stock
Colors brighter, more saturated, less muted
    Blacks deeper, neutral or “jet”
    Perfect registration
Paper stiffer or lighter/heavier than 1992 stock
    Very clean, sharp cut edges
Possible raised or plasticky ink feel

I do know the weight of the original in SW.  Awaiting the weight from the seller.  Also have the measurements (height/width).

Here's an update, for those that are interested.

I've put together some information, with the help of the seller and some of our fellow collectors that have verified originals (thanks!):

1. The dimensions for the item listed appear to be larger than the original, especially in height.  This is likely due to the module not being offset-trimmed like TSR originals often were.

2. The item is quite a bit heavier than the original.  This implies that paper/stock is potentially heavier, along with the difference in size.

3. The shrink wrap is tight, which has caused compression on the corners and it is not vented.  The original SW has vent holes and isn't tight on any known copies.

Caveats:
The measurements weren't taken with the same equipment and probably aren't that precise.
There could have been some variability in the originals, too, as these weren't produced in large volume.
The items weren't compared side-by-side, which would be the ideal scenario.
No detailed inspection/comparison of the printing methods used has been done.  This is the most important method of verification, but it's rather difficult to do without hi-resolution images or looking at the actual item.  Reproductions leave tell-tale artifacts that can often be easily discerned.

The ultimate validation would be inspecting, possibly comparing, the printing process of the item to known originals, but that will likely remain elusive without better pics, or someone that is knowledgeable examining it directly.

These observations aren't definitive, but they do appear to lean towards this not being an original.  You can all draw your own conclusions from the information presented.

Not sure this matters one way or the other, but is it A4?  Tough to tell for sure just by measuring the outside with the cover, but could explain the size difference.

The shrink not having air vents is pretty concerning.

That's a good thought and one that a UK collector brought up, as well, but it's closer to the standard U.S. POD size (8.5" x 11").

dbartman,

That's a fantastic list of printing data.  Thanks for posting it.  It deserves to be "pinned" somewhere for easy access.

Given that list, if ever examining an item in hand I would go straight to a 50x illuminated magnifier.  Even a cheap one should be able to clearly reveal such factors as character edging and ink absorption into the paper.

Thanks.  I realize that the details behind the the lists aren't provided, but that information can easily be looked up.

You also brought up one of the most important tools to verify the printing techniques used, which is a jeweler’s loupe or magnifier. A 10x and/or 20x loupe should be good for most observations.  Nothing against up to 50x magnifiers but they can be a little harder to use.  As you also mentioned, getting them with UV and LED lights built in, or have UV/LED lamps or handheld lights available is best.  Inexpensive loupes/magnifiers are readily available, too.

How much difference is there in the height dimension?

He's not listing the specifics so that future scammers can't profit from this.

Looks like he posted a picture of it with the other stuff it came with, and it could be because of the color differences between the items, but it does look larger than the other books. It's also kind of a strange collection of items that it would be with if it was authentic. You'd think if it was legit, it would be with something else from closer to the time frame than a Moldvay basic set.

OTOH, for a potential scam, it seems very little effort is being made to drive up interest either.

Just way odd all around.

It has 60+ watchers now too, so i expect someone is going to be making a very expensive bet.

The bad part of that is too, presuming it is in fact just a well done fake, that because Ebay sucks, it's going to be really difficult to keep track of where it went. Which is all kinds of bad for a large variety of obvious reasons.

It appears the feedback from the seller is 100% from buying products - I don't believe they have a sales history.

It is also worth noting this was listed the very next day after someone felt like paying $650 for a known "fake" ST1. Moreover, if it hasn't already been noted, the titles between the products are similar. Side by side:

"Up the Garden Path ST1 Module Book - Dungeons & Dragons D&D - Modern Reprint"

"The Jade Hare TSR Module Book - Dungeons & Dragons D&D - Modern Reprint"

Identical notation, different sellers. Not that it matters but, for those interested in seller locations, Hereford appears to be a farming town and somewhat of a retirement area. Stockton-on-Tees is on the other side of the country.

That is an uncanny duplication of the title. Good observation. It almost causes one to wonder whether the seller is one person or multiple people using multiple accounts. It's possible that the seller saw the ST1 listing and simply duplicated the format, but that seems unlikely.

The seller has been very cooperative with requests, but they haven't removed the listing or attempted to authenticate it, which was an option when presented with the facts and the legality of selling a counterfeit product. It certainly would translate into a significant increase in value, of which they have also been made aware of, which leads one to believe that they know it's not authentic. Otherwise, why not spend a little more effort to validate it?

The most charitable take is that the module is known to be a reprint (it is listed as such), and the seller saw (or was informed of) the demand for reprints to be pretty decent. Then followed the listing details to capture the same or similar audience.
