The best part of the second movie was the Honest Trailer spoof.

I wanted to like these new movies for the epic fantasy alone but they are so overdone and drawn out they are difficult to watch.

I'd agree it was more in the gamer/college community at the time, mingled with sci-fi fandom clubs. The demographic definitely trended younger after 1979, as you suggest. Holmes perhaps appealed to that demographic, and Holmes sold a ton of copies from late 1979 forward.

There are a few interesting correlations between early D&D & demographics. The Baby Boom is usually defined as starting in 1946, peaking in 1956. After 1956 begins a decline in birthrate that continues through 1964 (the end of the Baby Boom) to the present day. When matched up to D&D history, we have-

1974 - OD&D is published. The largest population group turns 18, followed by a declining number of 18-year-olds thereafter.
circa 1982 - The youngest of the Boomers turn 18. The fad market for games ends, as does Hollywood's second golden age & comic books' Bronze Age. Warren Publishing & Judges Guild go out of business, while TSR adopts a more slicker & commercialized style for a smaller & younger market.
