the Dealers list had been updated on the GC website - its upto 270 dealers now.

Still seems to be an awful lot of empty booths tho.

There have been lots of comments made that because WOTC was late to confirm, Gencon might have lost a lot of dealers.  Also, for you Brits, the economy is just awful this summer with the $1.50 a gallon rise in gas prices this year, houses being foreclosed on, and massive layoffs in various industries.  The economic climate is not conducive for a company to spend the time and effort getting a booth and travelling to Indy...they probably just figure if they are around next year, they'll do it then.

Opportunities abound though....I would bet you can probably get some good deals this year at the con.  However, I think the money there will flow, because although people can't afford big ticket items they often pony up for smaller items such as games...

30 days and counting....GenCon will be here  :D  and gone  :(   before you know it.  Badges have already started shipping as well so be on the lookout for them.  Dont accidentally throw them away like my wife did my last credit card bill.

Credit card bills being thrown would be okay, you can check what you owe online these days (and hopefully the wife can't) but having your Gencon badges ditched into the dustbins, that's just cruel.

Oh by the way, Martin, please have the wife step away from the mailbox........I said STEP AWAY FROM THE MAILBOX!

Are they actually badges or are they wristbands? Gencon Oz used a different coloured paper wristband for each day. Pain in the butt if you wanted to keep them.

I'm definitely not attending.  If anyone needs a pair of rooms at the Embassy Suites, let me know, otherwise I'll be cancelling the reservations soon.

I"m on the Mile High Comics mailing list, just got this, wow Chuck Rozanski (the owner) sounds pretty damn bitter. Thank goodness our annual convention for our favorite hobby is in beautiful Indy (and yes it really is nice) and not in So Cal (well, at least anymore).  Hopefully WOTC and Gencon learned their lesson and won't be visiting the west coast again....

I was so pleased at Gencon last year...plenty of accomodations right next to the center, and a very easy to get around downtown.  Prices aren't too outlandish either.  I wish Dallas could get their act together for something like this, but frankly they couldn't put on a convention this great.  I'll be thinking of all the San Diego Con suffering as we stroll around the covered walkways attaching the hotels to the convention center....!

My favorite part was the bit about union loaders/unloaders that have to bring your stuff to the convention center...LOL.  I understand New York has pretty much the same arrangement whenever they have a big convention in the city?

Mike B.

If you missed out on visiting San Diego this year, I have to tell you that the news isn't all bad. First of all, the hotel owners in San Diego have all come to realize that they can raise their rates to astronomic levels during the convention, as there are simply not enough rooms to handle all of the attendees. When even the very mediocre Howard Johnson's in Hotel Circle is charging $299 a night (as compared with the $84 regular rate), you know that comics fans are being totally hosed. Another negative consideration is the hassle of eating out. With more than a few publishers and Hollywood wheels in town, you can forget about a reservation in a nice restaurant. Thanks to the "suits," we've become beggars at our own banquet. Finally, transportation in and out of the convention center is a complete fiasco. When they built the huge expansion of the convention center a couple of years ago, they added no new underground parking. That decision was made because they have to run pumps 24 hours a day to keep the salt water from San Diego Bay from flooding the existing underground parking. As an alternative, they built a single multi-story parking structure to the south of the convention center, with room for about 500 cars. As of last year, however, they were building a huge new Hilton (?) hotel directly adjacent to this only place to park. I'm hoping that they have something else built for this year's parking, but I am not optimistic. As a result, over 100,000 comics fans will be needing to use public transportation into the convention center on Saturday. As nice as the San Diego trolley system and the Amtrak LA to San Diego Coaster might be (and the fact they double the number of trains for Comic-Con), the needed capacity is simply not there. As a result, the traffic jams on the I-! 5 freeway from La (it can take 6 hours to drive from LA to San Diego on Saturday morning...), and in the area around the convention center, are legendary. Completing the picture of this litany of misery are the lines to pick up tickets. The San Diego convention team keeps getting better each year at crowd management, but it is inevitable that trying to hand out hundreds of thousands of tickets will result in significant lines, oftentimes requiring hours of standing in the hot sun. Not fun.

Just in case you were wondering, the convention is darn near as much of a hassle for us, as it is for attendees. As of this year, comics dealers are no longer allowed to unload our freight in the actual convention center. We now have to stage our merchandise in an uncovered open-air parking lot miles away, so that it can then be driven into the convention center by the union truckload. Why? Because the convention committee has become so successful at attracting Hollywood studios and other entertainment companies (with their astoundingly massive displays), that there is simply no longer the time for our ragtag assemblage of cars, vans, and trailers packed full with comics and trade paperbacks to be unloaded in the loading docks. Once again, we have become beggars in our own home. I cannot even express to you how bitter this all makes me. Do not be at all surprised if this is our last year of exhibiting in San Diego. Of course, I do have to say that I contemplate that every year, and then still end up renewing our booths on Sunday night. That having been said, however, this whole progression of letting Hollywood take over our convention peeves me beyond words. For those of you who can remember the old ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell, this is certainly turning into a case where the convention committee is acting just like the hogs who took over the farm, and eventually sold out the rest of the animals to the humans. "Some animals are more equal than others..."

i read that, a truly damn shame.

its just typical of the human though. a chance to make money and its a whole new ball game.

its a shame that the passion isnt there anymore to just hold something where cost is reasonable - everyone makes money and its a success, guaranteeing a future event. its great business for everyone/everything around it and voila. there you have a future business plan without heisting anyone.

its that kind of shafting people that i truly hate and something which really impressed me about indy last year. it was great to see the city have reasoanble room prices around the convention centre.

the deal with regards to the union loading/unloading though is just truly preposterous.

sadly, thats life.

our music festivals are like this. the second you are on site, food and drink are at legendary prices. its amazing how fast you go through £200 :)

Hi,

in fact, most places theres a "captive market". I always remember getting breakfast in the NEC a few years ago - 10 items for $25!!!!!   :o

On a good note, I've just heard from my credit card about my replacement Indy airline tickets.
Not only are they paying for the original tickets, but they are stumping up the EXTRA $1200 to swap to BA Club Class!!
Hurrah for the UK Consumer Credit Act!

Cheers,
Malc

Been a pretty busy month. :/

* UPDATE *

Teams:
No changes from previous post, except that Grodog can't make the con.

Team Coordinator: I ask that each team pick one person to coordinate certain matters which will become apparent in the near future.
Email NOTE: Some future email sent to all members of a given Team will be sent with open CC's to all members (i.e. not Blind CC's).
If you object to sharing your email address with your team members, please let me know asap.

Team Composition, Recap:

RED TEAM, playing Friday:

Blackmoor
Bombadil
Center_Stage_Hobbies
Killjoy
Lawrenson
NetRodent

GREEN TEAM, playing Saturday:
BadMike
Bracton
DBartman
Kingofpain89
Mad Hermit

Shortly after the PCs are stabilized you'll receive the Scenario Background. (Hang onto your hats!)

Frank
