That was quick! Cheers, Scott!
Looking good already, but I'll see if I can break it again. *jk*

I have no idea!  And since I don't own an internet-capable phone (yeah, I know), I can't try this out myself.  Anyone who does so, please report your experience.

I recently created a forum for my college friends, so we could play D&D (sorta, kinda) in a PbP.

We're using http://www.proboards.com/ as our platform.
It looks like Dragonsfoot, which probably uses the same service.

Anyway, they (Proboards, not DF) have apps for iPhones and Droids
http://www.proboards.com/mobile

The interface is very clean, very user-friendly.
I am very new to the creation and maintenance of a forum, and I'm not always the brightest bulb in the chandelier, and it's been easy for me to use.

But, like you say, others should weigh in.
There could well be problems that I haven't run across yet.

There appears to be a mobile mod for phpbb, which we use here.  I'll take a look at it and see what it entails.  In the meantime, if someone could access the (normal) forum here with a smartphone, and see how well / how poorly it performs, that would be great.

I'd love to be able to leave avatars on, it makes it easier to see who is posting what, but I have a family and I refuse to have that up with my kids or wife wander by, which they do all the time.

So, my request is that we all agree not to have lewd avatars. Yes, it's my problem, that I'm pushing on to others, and my solution will certainly be to shut off avatars, but I'd rather I didn't have to take that step.

Thanks!

Hi,

I really hate to point it out, but there is plenty of artwork & minis connected to this hobby which depict naked women, including some of the earlier official rulebooks. It seems rather strange to object to that avatar on grounds of prurience.

If you are upset about some covered-up jugs then maybe this isnt the hobby for you?

Don't worry tho, Malc doesnt post here that often anymore.

Cheers,
KAL

It's very sad that you imply that none of us can enjoy this hobby and share different opinions about how to respect our wives, children and friends.  Since you jumped down the path to extraordinary rudeness followed by a direct personal suggestion, I am comfortable following your lead.  Perhaps you need less hobby and more family and friends to respect.

Hi,

I second all the above posts about how great this place is and I also am grateful for all your hard work (though I am sure you are only doing it for the money and the women).

Is there an easy way to goto a page of posts? I am new and I am trying to read through the archives to get a feel for what has already been hashed out before I make profound posts about dead topics. Also, I do most of my browsing on mobile devices and sometimes pressing on a page number (either within a topic or on an entire forum) is difficult with big fingers. Is the a way to have a next page button as in 1 2 3 .. 6 7 next >>?

These should in no way be seen as any sort of priority and they shouldn't distract from the great job you are doing.

I forgot to mention in my post that although I found the original responders snide suggestions offensive...

I also think the OP was naive.  If you need to keep the avatars off to enjoy your hobby and respect your family, by all means do so.  It is rather presumptuous to tell others what their avatars might or might not be, based on your own needs.  I feel certain a similar sentiment led to the tactless "find another hobby" response.  There is nothing wrong with this one, but it's a big world and clearly a lot of people here enjoy the dancing boobs.  And, if they can't keep 'em off the super bowl, they sure won't keep em off the internet.

I'm that transparent?

Not sure I understand what you mean.  If a topic is orange, then clicking it will bring you to the most recent unread, as previously discussed.  The quickest way to turn that feature "off" is to mark all the posts read.  However, if what you mean by "page of posts" refers to one of the 77 pages of threads in Collecting General, for instance, there are three ways to do it:

  • Lower right corner, there's a "next" link to take you to the next page.
  • Upper (and lower) right corner, there's the pagination squares, which will take you to the first three (or last three) topic pages.
  • Just to the left of the squares, if you click on the words ("Page 1 of 77"), a pop-up box appears which allows you to jump to a specific page.

All three of those methods also work on an individual topic's page.

Further, you can "bookmark" a thread, which simply stores it in your "Bookmark" list in the UCP.  So you can tag threads you want to peruse at a later time, for instance.

Making the site more mobile accessible is something I'll look into -- no promises, though.  The theory is that the entire "theme" (look) of the forum will switch to a more mobile-friendly theme when it detects a mobile browser user-agent.

Of course, I just tried this, and while I had it working some time ago, now it's broken!  To the shop!

Yes, still art images are totally the same as full color gifs. I'm perfectly comfortable with my kids watching as I flip through the monster manual.

Of course, you knew that and just wanted to be an ass.

Oh sorry, I had assumed you were a sexist caveman by thinking your wife would be offended by the avatar, I had assumed you had no finer feelings.

Do apologise.

I guess if youre upset about it, just run avatars off.

Cheers,
KAL

In my opinion it is mobile friendly as it is (I use iOS fwiw). It's only the icon sizes for pages. All in all great work.

At this time, no.  Though it's something I'll look into once this theme is reasonably "stable".  More themes means a multiple of the work I must do when I update a theme file.

Unfortunately (depending how you look at it), this theme is completely custom from the ground-up.  So even if there's a pre-made downloadable theme that we like, I can't just slap it in here and expect it to work (it won't).  Also, I'd have to balance it against the number of people who'd choose a different theme; I think on the old board, there were about 10 people using the subTrail (green) theme, and maybe three using Chronicles.  Everyone else stuck with the default.

Out of curiosity, what were you thinking in terms of a different theme?  Different colors, or completely different layout?

If you want to see a completely different theme in action, head over to the test board (add an "s" to the end of "forum" in the URL), and from your UCP, select Board Preferences, then "Weapons and Adventures" theme.  I ended up stealing some of the components from that theme here, but this incarnation is significantly toned down.  Take a look too at Prosilver and subsilver2, which are the default themes with phpBB.

The old Forum used to e-mail you the message, rather than just a notice to log on and read your messages. Can you set this one up to do that? Or do you now need to log on to see the body of the message text? I can't log on at work, so the old style was better for getting PMs during the day.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.
