I'm looking forward to the 2nd issue also. Enjoyed the first one. The intro was well done.

Their web-site states subscribers will receive issue #2 on July 31st.  I have not received my copy yet.  How about anyone else?  

On facebook (I think it was facebook) sometime in the past 48 hours they said it was getting set to print and issue 2 will be at Gencon.  I am guessing it should be shipping in the next weekish if that is the case.

"Update on the progress of the Magazine. The layout is complete and is off to the printers today. I will confirm when I hear that the first issues are going out to subscribers. This means that issues will be in the mail in August.

O.K. Gygax Magazine issue number 2 arrived a while back, and I must confess I was somewhat disappointed.  I waited a while before I said anything hoping for a review where I could comment, but I guess I'll need to take some initiative.  Maybe few people care, but I hope the magazine succeeds because I like regular, mind-stimulating ideas about fantasy gaming.

The cover is fantastic and the look and size are also excellent.  The fold-out map had a lot going for it, but the accompanying adventure wasn't outstanding.  There were also several articles I liked and most of the humor sections were funny enough.  The quality was good overall, but the table of content's page numbers for The Kobold's Cavern did not match up.  But the big problem was that there was just too much space devoted to gaming which did not apply to my interests.  The Samurai Battles, Doctor Who, Mage Wars, The One Ring, The AGE System and Midgard/Dungeon World articles were all of limited to no interest to me as converting them into useful ideas were futile or time consuming.  The Jon Peterson and Jess Hartley articles had me scratching my head.  One article is about something that might be historical and the other suggests that gamers do a better job of introducing their friends.  Really.

In other words, I felt like they were trying to make too many people happy. I must confess that my own gaming interests are narrow compared to most folks, but I can not see how there is any way you can make most gamers happy with a magazine that covers such a wide spectrum.  Chances are, when you cover so many game genres, you may hit everybody with something good, but that still leaves everybody feeling like they paid a lot for not enough.  I advocated in my initial letter to the editor to make most people happy over a long term than lose the majority eventually.  I am not advocating only doing D&D/AD&D.  For example, if all they did was 90% fantasy and science fiction role playing, they'd cover most of their constituency and probably make 3/4 of the magazine worthwhile to the buyers.  The articles I mentioned above would be fine if there was only one or two of them per issue instead of half the magazine.

I really hope I am wrong that this wider-appeal approach will lead to their slow death, and I wish them all the best.  Maybe part of the solution is for some of us to contribute worthwhile material for publication.  Badmike and I submitted an article just this summer for example.  Time will tell if they are on the right or wrong track.

My information is that they printed 5,000 copies of issue #1 and it was completely sold out prior to Gen Con. I have no idea where they are with issue #2, but it was the best single selling item at the Gen Con OSR booth despite it being available somewhere else in the hall (which was a surprise to me). That said, the vast majority (around 95%) of those who bought Gygax magazine did not buy anything else at the OSR booth, or for that matter, even looked around. We notice that particular phenomena just hours after the dealer hall opened on Thursday and the trend continued until close of business on Sunday.
Note, I was glad to carry Gygax and I hope to have it again next year. I am just making observations.

Well, I also bought mine from the OSR booth (but added several more Pacesetter mods too).  After reading it, I did feel that it wasn't as good as issue #1... that being said, it's always hard to follow up your first performance with an equally great or better second.  

Since this is pretty much the only print magazine on the market now (overlooking a few of the smaller ones), I think we have to be patient as they figure out the right mix.  If we fail to support it over the next year, we may lose it entirely.

So my opinion is that it wasn't as good as the first one but not too bad.  Still a bit pricey but print is a tough business, especially when you figure in the mailing costs.

I received Gygax Magazine issue #3 today!  Yay!  A quick peruse through its pages shows some promise and some disappointments.  While I have not read it yet, there is a huge mini-module with a beautiful fold-out map.  I am looking forward to reading that.  Just one good mini-module can make a whole issue worthwhile.  I was surprised to find a Metamorphosis Alpha adventure by James Ward, but since I don't play that game, it's of limited value to me, but is probably a gem for lots of people.  My first impression is that the magazine covers too wide a spectrum of games for my taste (again), and I may comment more when I have read more.
