Greetings, this is just a courtesy announcement for those with any interest in AFS fanzine.

Issues 1-5 will be going permanently out of print when the stock I have on hand is gone. (I currently have enough material, covers etc for approximately 10 of each of these issues, give or take). I don't have the time or desire to keep producing/stocking all of these different back issues - so basically when they are gone they are gone.

Issue #6 will still be available for the foreseeable future.

I am current working on Issue #7 (and accepting submissions) - so the zine is still alive.
If you have never heard of AFS magazine the link in my sig will take you to a place where you can learn all you want. A SAN check may be needed afterwards :wink:

I thought I'd post a little plug for my local game convention, if that's okay. It's called Council of Five Nations, held every October. Certainly not a large con by any means, but it's been growing pretty steadily every year.

I just recently found an RPG blog that looked rather interesting to me, and, for the life of me, I can't find it again.

I want to say that it was OSR-focused, and a notable feature that I remember is a bit down on the right side of the page that had a current/revolving Lulu coupon thing.

I know this isn't a lot to go on, but does anyone possibly know what site I'm talking about?

My favorite lines from Jon's article:

"I promise all of you," Gygax wrote in the Dragon, "that if the D&D film isn't of the quality of Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, I will not only blast it... but I will apologize to you as well." He adds, "Give us a chance to prove that the genre can be good!"

Despite years of further efforts, Gygax never managed to get this script optioned, let alone produced. So ultimately, we have no finished film to compare against Star Wars. But we might wager that if the film had been made, Gary would have owed us his promised apology.

I tried to get them to put in a picture of a certain collector on this forum proudly holding his leather slipcover copy of the script, embossed with Brian Blume's name, but it was hard enough to get what little I got in there. Maybe I'll put that up on my blog.

For me, whether the screenplay was awesome or terrible, it was going to be a great story. If awesome, then a tragedy that it wasn't produced. If terrible... then a comedy.

I was just slumming over on Dragonsfoot and I noticed a post you made 5 years ago Scalydemon (so I apologize in advance for 1)thread necromancy 2)cross-website contamination 3)asking you to justify a post from 1800 days ago) where you mentioned that Peter Jackson erred by not having Bombadil in the FOTR. Was he supposed to make the films even longer? I love long movies, and I love the source material as much as anybody, but axing Bombadil seemed like an easy call to me, as long as the audience is made aware of the fact that there is a history that stretches back thousands of years and that some of the elder creatures are much more closely tied to nature and the very fabric of the world than men are. To me the three biggest disappointments in the LOTR movies are:
1) The undead Green Plague sweeping through Minas Tirith muting the heroism of the Rohirrim (and cutting out the Black Fleet unfurling the banner of the King and Aragorn & Eomer meeting in the middle of the fray-oh wait was I saying the movies should be shorter?)
2) The Lord of the Nazgul throwing Gandalf the White down like a rag doll. He is a Maia wearing Narya and The Chief Nozdrul is wearing a lesser ring. Excuse me?
3) The lessening of the noble Faramir. In the books he is a close comparison to Aragorn and he immediately and always does the right thing regarding Frodo and the ring.

On balance I think the movies are great and (realizing the following is blasphemous) even improve some things.
1) The wizard battle between Saruman & Gandalf. In the book it seems like Gandalf is sent up to his room with no dinner.
2) The battle on Weathertop. In the book it seems odd that with THE RULING RING right in front of them that Aragorn armed with a +2 sword, leather armor and a torch, is able to drive off 5 Nazgul, including the Witch-King. In the movie it feels much more believable.

On the thread necromancy regarding the LOTR movies... For me they are a separate entity from the books. I enjoyed all three movies for what they were. Broadly true to the original books yet distinct and due to Hollywood's inherent predisposition to mess with original stuff to make it the "director's vision" I thought it was good. I am aware of the criticisms/rants, etc. but on the whole I am thankful they stayed true to the books (again painting with a broad brush here). The Hobbit ones are a different matter. I went into those recent movies with an expectation that certain scenes from the book I wanted to see but knowing full well they would add their own touch. Critiquing things like this would require a lot of typing, but on the whole they were alright. I see what they tried to accomplish and tried to make "their own" and "make accessible" to a modern day audience. I just hope that a small percentage of said audience who saw the movies but never read the books were inspired enough to read the books and perhaps check out some more fantasy gems. I suppose Game of Thrones does the same sort of thing too. If done well, they can get the imagination going, however nothing beats the imagination of the individual. With a little bit of luck, they try DM'ing a game and creating their own memorable scenes the players remember and keep talking about!
