Frankly, my suspicions (however unconfirmed as I do not have the concrete evidence at my end) of this one due to very similar rudeness of tone to Cougie :

There was also one post, which seems to have been deleted (or hidden from my view) for whichever reason, that said (paraphrased) "I bought an item from 'DM Dave' one time and he was really cool." While those were not the same words from that particular post, he did address Cougie as "DM Dave" like that was a professional term or something. Who on this website calls Cougie that?

If that particular post could be recovered (or perhaps I cannot see the post for whichever reason), that would be nice.

The suspected "sockpuppets" (perhaps Cougie from different IPs, or having cronies on other IPs or locations posted for him) have blank or nearly blank descriptions on their forum links, and apparently do not log onto the Acaeum very often. Please realize all of the well-established, well-known and reputable people with information on their forum links who disagreed or objected with my opinions regarding the customs issue, are not of the same category :)

I had decided not to post on this thread again as I felt it was going nowhere. (Veiled threats and insinuations, unproven theories and the posting of photographs of a person's home generally telegraph a directon a conversation is going in.)

Unfortunately it seems I have been called out so I need to put some information forward so certainposts are not read as fact by those who do  not do a little research.

Point one, which is not provable is that I am no-ones sock puppet. I can only let those here make there own decisions on this.
Point two is regarding posts not being visible. The previous post concerns mine of 17th August which  I can clearly see. I have not changed any of my settings so if you cannot find this please either look again  or contact foulfoot.
Point three is that I have been a registered user here since 2004 and though I do not post as regularly as I once did I still log in almost every day to keep abreast of the community.

I hold myself to high standards (which I sometimes do not meet) and will often pull out of this kind of discussion because sometimes on forums it is clear that the situation cannot be resolved or even discussed reasonably. Things can quickly turn personal and even with a thick skin it is sometimes difficult to avoid being dragged down into a pointless debate.
I stand  by all of my comments here. If I have lied or somehow upset anyone personally then I am sorry but other than that there is really nothing else that I can say. (Though I will always defend myself if I feel personally slighted).

Take it easy
Carl

And DM Dave used to be a fairly common namefor Cougarrinard,  sorry if you were unaware.

Well, my apologies for offending you, because I was not thinking of you in particular. After all, you are far from anonymous, you obviously are NOT a sock puppet, and I belatedly see you also referred to Cougie as "DM Dave." However, you were not the one who posted the deleted paraphrased. "I bought from DM Dave one time and he was cool."

As far as "going nowhere" with the customs issue and my strong sense Cougie had bribed help  goes: the differences in UK and US laws were posted several times, and my admittedly unproven  rationale about possible bribed UK eBay employees, was clearly explained with the inclusion of applying "Occam's razor" logic. Presumably eBay UK has the common sense to hire competent, experienced employees to its Appeals  and Account Reviews teams---precisely to avoid a wrongfully applied "counterfeit" decision that reflects very, very badly upon eBay who has more competition than ever before from sites like Alibaba and Amazon. So I do believe my points have been expressed with strong clarity, regardless of my bias. (And if you were in my shoes through this ordeal, you'd probably be a little biased yourself!)

So:

(1.) I didn't realize people used to call Cougie "DM Dave" though they probably cringe about that in retrospect. I apologize for making you feel like you were being lumped in, and admit I could have worded that a bit more tactfully. Yes, I made a mistake with that.
(2.) You and I do not agree on some points. That is perfectly fine. We agree to disagree, something that seems to be an increasingly precious quality in these current post-2016 Dark Times (Here in the USA, anyhow.)
(3.) For the love of Morgan Ironwolf, stop thinking that everything I am writing is about YOU because obviously it isn't. Yes, I am opinionated in some regards (as I hope you are?). No, I am not a psycho about it, either. So take a deep breath and relax. I am not out to get you, and nobody else is.

Thanks.

Hmum.
Once more into the breach.

1- I still think the bribery theory is a leap. If I were to use Occam's Razor theory as you have then it is nowhere near the simplest reason.
2 - Rereading this thread from start to finish it is difficult for me not to consider that you have taken issue with my points.
3- Some posts have been deleted from these threads - strangely these were mostly supportive of you but I think they were probably deleted  because the user, Shopborderlands, posted pictures of Cougarrinards house which I think is a huge no-no.

" . . . dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead . . . "

1.) I would be happy to hear your theory, of how eBay could allow this kind of monumental slip-up when the rules for international disputes are there in stone, including the need for the buyer to provide photographic evidence to go along with their "counterfeit" claims. (This rule is in place precisely  to prevent the kind of scamming that Cougie initially succeeded at pulling off.) And you know, this isn't something boneheaded to the extreme, like firefighters scrambling to put out a five-alarm blaze only to find their fire trucks are out of gas.  This took some skill, some cooperation to successfully pull off (at first, anyway). So once again, please tell me what the more logical explanation for eBay's monumental violation of their own well-known, well-understood policy.

2.) It may be strange to you, but it isn't strange to me. As I said, I worded this wrong, and I apologized for my mistake since I have no issue with you---not to mention I don't know you, though I don't think you would have remained on this forum if you were some kind of a sockpuppet. That being said, feel free to message me on this point so we can discuss this away from here.

3.) Thank you for acknowledging my point that comments had been deleted. I did not see the photos you mentioned (if they were, they must have been taken down in record time), but did happen to see them on a Facebook closed page. My reaction (which should have been more condemning, admittedly) was:

" . . . while I wouldn't ever want to share his actual home or anything of that personal nature online (as that could indeed be construed as harassment) this guy needs to be stopped, British sensibilities or not."

If you are on that particular (closed-access) Facebook page, feel free to review. Since you seem to be big on insinuations and thinly veiled threats and such, I am guessing that because several deleted posts were in support of me, then somehow those people, along with myself must have some kind of ulterior motives. Something . . . in the grey areas and blurred lines.

But you know what? Karma works both ways. Posting photos of someone's home, no matter how vile that person can be, might lead that vile person responding in kind. I don't go there. We can spokeo or Google Earth each other till we're blue in the face. But that's personal harassment, pure and simple, and I don't go there.

I also believe that since you are mentioning Shopborderlands, you might want to extend him the courtesy of letting him know you mentioned him.

*sips tea*

So who is the 'sock puppet' then?
Me, red bus, vosnarth or gyg?
Or is everybody in on the conspiracy?

..…..and I have no idea who the above people are, or who rinard is, apart from what's posted on here.

Waiting to find out whether my whole life's been a lie and that I am in fact an ebay dealer's sockpuppet.

And since we're printing screen shots of web pages, here's the link (reached by following ashmire's link above) showing that books are zero-rated for VAT: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rates-of-va ... newspapers

Which leads to:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/zero-rating ... 110#para36

"3.7 Children's picture books
These are zero-rated, whether they are printed on paper, plastic or textiles, such as children's rag books, unless the article is essentially a toy. Examples of articles which are standard-rated as toys include:
-books consisting wholly or mainly of pictures of models for cutting out, but books with printed text directly related to the material for cutting out covering at least 25% of the pages can be zero-rated (pages of assembly instructions should not be included as printed text for the purpose of determining eligibility for zero-rating)
-items where the pages are boards for games"

It wasn't about books being 0% for vat.  The rather long and tedious topic in this thread was about whether a book is in fact a book.  According to some legal cases, sometimes a book is not a book.  It is actually a game.

Bottom line, use your judgement on whether a book is a book and a game is a game.  If you are shipping a box set, it probably looks more like a game than a book.  Otherwise, ship a role-playing book as a book and you will probably never have to worry about some unseen government agency coming after you for a $1.00 that you didn't pay, because a book in actually a game.

The alternative is to not ship anything to countries that have these ludicrous rules.

Thanks for highlighting the gov website.

Pauly, please note I did say customs are hit and miss on what they tax. It also says on the eBay U.K. notes that customs or VAT "MAY" be added.

I still don't think coug has anyone at eBay in his pay, there isn't enough evidence to support that

It's much more likely they were just being incompetent, which is standard eBay U.K. practice.

I've had a sale years ago of a marvel figure go wrong, because the buyer claimed it was damaged. His photos showed it was actually not the model I sent! But eBay still favoured him. I gave up in the end, the stress and hassle wasn't worth it

Wow, man. I have no words. Tin foil hats for everyone, I guess? Better invest in aluminum if the tinfoil hat market is going to take off presently.

red_bus is a superb eBayer. I have done business with him before, would do business again, and would recommend him as a trustworthy, ethical UK seller alternative to Cougie each time red_bus has items up for sale.

Regarding "Cougie sockpuppets", there were two that I thought sounded suspicious. They were "nn" , and  someone whose comment was deleted. Just as I have said.  Maybe I did get a bit too caustic and sardonic for my own good, and maybe some of you confused an unprovable gut-feeling suspicion for actual evidence. I have also said that everyone who has information in their forum links, and has obviously been here for a long time, are not at all "sockpuppets". You may have opinions that differ from mine, just as mine may be different from yours. And that is fine in a world those civility is on a steady decline since 2016.

If I have grandkids some day in the next 5-10 years, I'd better make a few sock puppets to make 'em laugh while the children are small. Maybe I'll I'll call one of the sock puppets Cougie, just for kicks and giggles.
