Hi,

if the original is auctioned off, where does the money go?

It should be divided equally amongst those who ordered the print, to offset some of the cost.

Or the original could be raffled amongst those who ordered the print - so your $50 gets you a limited edition print PLUS a 1 in 30 chance of getting the original.

Cheers,
Malc

I am in for 1.
I don't give a rats ass if I get #1 or #30 just as long as there is an assurance that there will not be reprints.
(with the exception being usage for a worthy fundraising cause). :D

If you number them 1 through X, how do you decide who gets number 1?

It is Ben's idea and he's the driving force behind the commission, so unless he decides otherwise he obviously gets # 1.  I think that's simple enough.

Best,

I don't care which number print I get either.  As for the original....to me it would only make sense to have it auctioned off.  As for where the money goes, my opinion is that the proceeds should go to charity and to let Erol choose which charity it goes to.

I dont think that splitting the money up from the sale of the original between the people that buy the print to offset cost makes a whole lot of sense if you are only paying between $50 and $100.  It's an art print, not a timeshare.

If the art prints are coming in at around the $50 mark, I'd be in for 2 copies.

If the original artwork is going to be sold, it might be better to hold an auction for it on the acaeum (such as send the highest bid to benjoshua) who will update the current price.  The auction could then be run for a couple of weeks so all interested parties have lots of time to bid.  The benefits of this are it would most likely go to an Acaeum member and also there would be no fees involved with selling it.

I think speculation or investment needs to be discouraged in this project.  Nothing will bog a project down faster than arguments about who gets what number or who gets the original artwork.  As long as all issues are decided up front such concerns are immaterial to me.  For example, each person should be limited to two sets, and I think the original artwork needs to be auctioned if it's not being kept by Otus.  Figuring out reprint rights would be very helpful, but frankly is not a deal breaker in my case and shouldn't be in any case if you are a collector first and foremost.

I'll be in for one -- I don't want the original, and do not think simply having the idea is sound enough to warrant getting it either (besides, Mike can argue he had the idea first and then we just sit here getting nothing done) so it should be sold... hopefully at the GenCon auction for charity, and if not this year, then next, assuming the artist does not keep it. I have solicited artwork before, but have no contact with Erol, but I have also not had to do prints of it so that's different. Anyway, I don't really care what print I get, would prefer there is only one print run ever, and that the original is either kept by Otus or sold for charity. Beyond that, as long as the art is not a portrait of an Acaeum member (hehe) then all's good.

A couple of thoughts on this, although while I am not actually interested in participating, I just wanted to put my $.02 in:

1)  I think this is a great idea for everyone who wants to participate.

2)  I think that if you want to be involved, you should be doing so because you are only interested in having the print and not looking at it as some money making or investment enterprise.

3)  If you are interested in it being anything other than fun (i.e an investment enterprise, arguing about who gets #1), you should probably not participate, as doing it anything other than for fun, is going to ruin it for everyone else.  It's okay for it to be about the money sometimes, in this circumstance that is not what the project appears to be about.

4)  Having the artist keep the original or auctioning it off for charity is probably the best way to handle it.  If the majority decides that it should go to one of the participants, it should be done via lottery with someone who is impartial and not involved in the project handling the drawing for who gets it.

:?:

I'm not involved, but just out of helpfulness/curiosity - if the original gets auctioned to an outside party, what's to keep that person from making their own prints from it?

Seems to me like that could be a somewhat sticky point.

You could destroy it, although that has an obvious drawback.

You could arrange for Otus or a paying member to keep it and not print it, which would probably work for awhile, although everyone dies sometime, and the heir could do whatever they want.

The fun of this thing is having one of the limited number of prints dedicated to the Acaeum.
As long as the initial prints are signed/numbered/dated what transpires afterward with "bootleg prints" would be the equivalent of a PDF of a rare module. Same content but not the same as having an "original".

Yeah, what he said.  Later prints (or even forgeries) are a possibility with any piece of art, though I would think that unlikely.

We are now up to 32 art requests with several folks yet to clarify their interest!  Exciting!  Adding your name to this list does not commit you to buy a print, but indicates strong interest and the money to back up that interest.

The list I have, in the order of their registered interest, and the quantity they desire are:

Benjoshua 1
Mars 1 (Edit: 2)
smarmy1 1
le Rahib 1
bombadil 1

PaulKM 1
mdr003 1
Badmike 1
Gyg 1
jasonw1239 1
stratochamp 1
dbartman 1
carrejo 1
Serlean ? (Edit: 1)
Rakeesh sah Tarna ?
mbassoc2003 1 or 2
Center_Stage_Hobbies 1
Kingofpain89 1
deimos3428 ?

Hi,

yup, and I dont mind which numbers I get either.

Maybe when the money is collected then whoever ponyed up could have a vote on what happens to the original. I'm happy to go with the majority decision.

Cheers,
Malc

An interesting thought.  Maybe it would help if I shared where I was coming from.  First off, I wanted something that roared classic D&D.  The artist helps a lot, but the content of a dragon in a dungeon is highly symbolic.  Second, the choice of four characters with the four main classes and the two most commonly-used alternative races also seemed to summarize D&D.  Yeah, there are paladins, druids, illusionists, halflings, half-orcs and gnomes(and more), but, to me, those were not the core of what this game means.

The committee will consider this and any other thoughts. I am not cutting off discussion about this. More feedback is good. 8)
