Scott, how do we get to the Acaeum through forumrunner?

Note that ForumRunner will crash on the iPhone if you're on 3G and have several apps running.

This isn't Scott's issue, obviously.

In fact it might be a result of at&t's really inconsistent quality.

Foul,

I thought it was too busy at first but it's looking pretty darn good now!  Here are some observations/questions:

If this has already been mentioned, forgive me for mentioning, but didn't the forums, subforums, and topics pages (The Acaeum Forums  â€¢   Collecting General) used to have a link at the bottom of the page as well as the top?  There is a "Return to Collecting General" but no "The Acaeum Forums".  Also, were the forum/topic page links originally above or below the "New Topic", "Post Reply" etc buttons?  Not that it's a big deal, but I noticed when I move there with the mouse, I'm having to adjust.  Could be my targeting system is off...

Did something change or broken with acronyms?

On occasion, when hitting preview or submit, the selection will not be acknowledged the first time or two.  Might not be related to the update but it wasn't doing that before to me and it's not happening every time.  It can result in a double posting.

Also, a minor point, but graphic text for "The Acaeum" is a bit fuzzy at a zoom of 100%.

Just a comment. I think the changes are great.

Years ago I was very active on the Space Dot Com forums. They once did a massive upgrade and the new format was SO different from the old and so crappy that I more or less left the forum. I couldn't stand looking at it. Also our post counts disappeared. As a result I always worry when fora are upgraded.

But I think the changes here are really good. Keeps the old and adds new features. Really well done!

Well, I had it working with forumrunner on my iPhone yesterday, and now the fucker keeps crashing every time I try getting on The Acaeum.  Other fora are working fine in forumrunner, though.  Irritating as hell.  It's looks like forumrunner is trying to log me in on The Acaeum and then kicks me back to the iPhone home screen for some reason.  I've tried reinstalling it, but no improvement.  I know it's not Scott's problem...any advice on how to fix it in forumrunner?

Yep, the fucker keeps crashing on me, now :-/

I thought the upgrade to iOS 5.1 might help, but all that did was use up 2 hours of my day.

Forum apps are usually pretty stable ...
hell, it's not like you're trying to compute the human genome while playing Angry Birds.
It's mostly a bunch of text.

That's true, and it's annoying me too.  :)  I will look at putting a link at the bottom.

You remember correctly.  Quite a few things have moved around.  The forum software "upgrade" was not a patch, but a complete re-write; the theme (the look) and all the mods from the old software were not compatible with the new version.  Which leads me to --

dbartman wrote:Did something change or break with acronyms?

Since the old mods are not compatible, I've had to find replacements for them.  The acronym mod is next on my to-do list, but I haven't made any promises because I'm not sure how it will turn out.  Stay tuned.

I think it *is* being acknowledged, but there's sometimes a delay on the server side when you hit Preview or Submit.  I'll take a look at that and see if there's anything I can do.

There's a slight shadow behind the words, which causes that anti-alias-style fuzziness.

I'll see if I can figure out what's wrong with ForumRunner.  As I don't have a phone to test it on, might be a bit tough.  :(  I assume there's something in the site's code that it doesn't like, and it's probably something I added or changed since I installed ForumRunner, which at least narrows down the candidates.

Have .gif avatars been disabled?
My avatar was working fine but now doesn't appear at all, although I notice yours moves. So does it need to be a paricular file type now?

Nope, .gifs are fine.  However, if it's an animated .gif, and the forum needs to shrink it, it will lose the animation.

If you continue to have difficulty, e-mail it to me and I'll take a look at it.

It crashes on my iPad, as well.
So, it's not just the iPhone software.
Both are Apple gadgets, though, likewise withbombadil's phone.

My son has a Kindle Fire, though, which uses Android apps.
If it's available, I'll do a test drive on it too.

ForumRunner is available on the Kindle Fire. It is $1.99. Not worth it, and not needed. You can view the forums just fine, though a little scrunchy, with the native browser. One double tap enlarges it and makes it readable. At least, it does for me.

I won't buy it, then.
If free, I would've tried it.
Would rather use that $1.99 and donate to Acaeum

I checked into the ForumRunner problem briefly but didn't see anything amiss.  Is everyone experiencing the same problem on iOS -- attempting to log in, then kicking back to the home screen / app has crashed?  Any error code / report associated with it?  Does it happen every time?

FoulFoot wrote:I was kinda split on that feature, honestly.  While I can see the benefit (like how you describe, for getting the text at work), there were two big negatives:

1) I can't tell you how many times people replied to the e-mail, thinking they were replying to the post (and the reply e-mail was sent to me!),

2) complaints from people saying "how come these PMs are stuck in my Outbox?" (the PM *had* been read -- via the e-mail -- but since it was not physically clicked on in the PM Inbox, the system regarded it as unread, and it remained in the sender's Outbox).

Unfortunately, I feel these two negatives outweigh the positives, at least for now.

After trying it for a few days, I think I agree with Ian on this one.  Most forums do just send a notification of a PM (and usually the subject line), but it was a nice feature here to see the message, as I pass back and forth more PMs here than all the other forums I visit combined.  Would it be possible to implement this as a selectable option?  I promise I never have nor will do either of the two things you mention as issues.   :D

Well, right after you flipped the switch and made it available, it was fine.
It worked quite well in fact.
It was the next day that it began this weird crashing (exactly as you describe).
Unfortunately it was also during that same period that I upgraded to iOS 5.1, but I swear I think the crashing happened before that.  But I could be wrong. Usually am.

To narrow it down further: was it *exactly* the next day that it began happening?  I installed ForumRunner at 9 PM EST on Wednesday.  On Thursday at 4 PM EST I installed another mod.  From Thursday 10 PM to 1 AM (Fri morning), four more mods.  Can you say for certain about what time you first noticed problems?

It was fine Wednesday evening and Thursday morning before I got to the office ~ 8:30 AM Central Time.
Sometime later Thursday (after dinner?) I noticed it crashed.

It also crashed on Friday, and I remember this specifically because I was at my mom's nursing where there is just nota whole lot to do, but they do have wi-fi.
And I was fiddling with my own forum via ProBoards and its app.

Apps do not crash very often on my gadgets, so when they do it's usually just a symptom of having too many open.
I will try to fish out the app history on my iPhone and ipad.
It's a strange little mystery.
