No doubt the '85 Bears would have put up a valiant struggle.

The '85 Bears enjoyed a perfect storm season.  The Patriots making the Super Bowl to get squished was typical of the breaks that went the Bears' way.  A fluke victory over the Raiders put the Patriots in position to get embarrassed.

The '85 Bears did not face a team with the offensive power of the 1990's Cowboys teams.  The '85 Bears were a weak offensive team that relied on turnovers and defensive pressure to keep them in games.

Of course, it is possible that the Cowboys might have blown the game on turnovers.  (That's what the Cowboys did against the 49ers in one NFC championship game during that great era.  That's why Steve Young got a Super Bowl win.)

If the two teams played seven times I call it 5-2 in favor of the Cowboys...and that's being generous to the Bears.

That was an entire era during which the real Super Bowl was the NFC Championship game.

Agreed. The NFC Championship game was the real Super Bowl back then...

However, I still hold to the fact that the '85 Bears would beat the '92 Cowboys strictly on their defense alone. When they won the coin toss for the Super Bowl game, they chose to put their defense on the field first. Name one other team in Super Bowl history that chose to do that.

That and Payton up the middle, Payton down the left, Payton down the right...

Anyone know of any simulation programs that could put teams from various years against each other?

Everybody forgets that the Dallas DEF in the 91-96 was pretty salty. The regularly shut out teams and excelled in turnover ratio.  While it wasn't as good as the Bears Def of '85, the offense was miles better. Aikman vs Mcmahon would be a bad joke.  Cowboys O-line was better, and while the RBs evened out, the Cowboys WR corp would get the nod. Biased as I am, I would have to give the Cowboys the nod about 75% of the time. As good as the Bears Def was, I don't think they faced as versatile an offense as the Cowboys. They could score from anywhere with anyone.  I remember watching a old game on the NFL network last year of the 92 or 93 Cowboys.  It was a drive that began at their 20 and ended in a TD. In between there were runs by Emmitt, passes to Novacek, Irvin, Harper, and even a fullback carry by Moose that got a first down.  The riches of that offense were embarrasing.

Crazy first round of the draft, having it all by itself on Thursday is stupid, but oh well..

Lots of draft day surprises. The Cowboys Dez Bryant pick blew me out of my socks.  Wow, they finally take  a1st round WR (after Michael Irvin in 1988) and get an stud and not a reach. Awesome.

Cowboys have become a typical middle of the pack yearly playoff team (assuming they manage to make the playoffs!!!). Dez Bryant will continue the remarkable trend of Texan mediocrity for years to come...

Agree with Mike on this one.
Bryant will not be a bust.
FAR too much talent in those hands and legs for that to happen.

Yes, the guy is obviously a disipline problem, but so was Irvin... and TO... and Moss... and Marshall, as well as many other star WRs.
And like some of the names above, Bryant fell in the draft almost completely based on those perceived problems.
Otherwise he would have gone in the top 5... easily.

I think the Cowboys got a great deal with that pick.
IMO It was one of the best value picks in the entire draft.

Looks like I will start following and (mildly) rooting for the Cleveland Browns this year.  I think Colt McCoy has a better chance of developing into a decent NFL quarterback than Bradford, Tebow, or Clausen.

If Clausen can get over his ego, I disagree with you.  Though I think Colt will become an "okay" QB.  Bradford is still the premium pick to become a star quarterback.

There was a lot of value at the end of the first round this year, teams that didn't reach like the Cowboys, Colts, Lions and Cardinals came up big.

Predictions:

If Dez Bryant is healthy, and his idiot agent lets him sign before Game 8, he is offensive rookie of the year this season.

The Chiefs might be relevant again, I thought they had one of the best drafts, and they have the defensive rookie of the year in Berry.

The Redskins had a terrible draft, and they have signed the oldest free agent class in the history of the world this off season. I'm predicting a sweet, sweet year as a Redskins hater.....Keep on being Snyderiffic, Little Danny!

Tharizdun will soon have a new team to root for, the Los Angeles Jaguars. It's pretty obvious the Jags tanked their picks to make them worse, hurt attendance more, and give them a ticket to being the new LA team. Start waving the pom poms now, west coasters!

Bret FAR-VRE will once again not decide if he's playing this year until training camp is over (Not draft related, but just had to throw that in there);

Then, he'll throw for 3000 yds and 25 tds in the regular season before flaming out against the Cowboys in the playoffs with 4 picks.

Trading for Joe Orton and Brady Quinn + drafting Tim Tebow  = WTF Broncos....

Speaking of quarterbacks, anyone else surprised the Steelers didn't cover their ass this year by taking one in the draft?  Ben Rape-moreberger is out for six games and nothing is expected of the team this year, so why not take a flier on Tebow, Clausen, McCoy, even Kafka?  Ben is a great QB but a meathead....I wouldn't be surprised if he was out of the league in two years.

Difference between Irvin and the others....

Irvin played his career for one team because he did not become such an ego problem that he was hurting the team effort.

True to some extent.
But some ego aside, his off the field antics and legal troubles inluded many things.
Which did (all too often) draw very negative press to the team overall and especially to him.

"Bradford is still the premium pick to become a star quarterback."

Trouble with QB's taken so high is that the teams are so terrible and they get pounded and beat up before they can develop a lot of times. I think about 1/2 of the "bust" quarterbacks are legit but a lot of them just never really had a fair chance. If you put Bradford behind that same Rams 0 line he's probably going to suck just as bad as anyone else has over the past 3 years.

"Tharizdun will soon have a new team to root for, the Los Angeles Jaguars."

Hopefully this will motivate another team to move out here 1st

True enough with Irvin and his antics.  He drew negative press.

Irvin was able to apologize and seem contrite.  He was able to display an understanding of cause and effect on others resulting from his personal choices.  That's why Irvin regarded his induction into the Hall of Fame as a form of redemption...because he recognized his need to be redeemed.

The others don't seem to have an empathetic bone in their bodies.

Remember at the start of last season when Brandon Marshall was able to beat whatever set of charges he was currently facing?  The Broncos told their players not to gloat about it to the press...and Marshall interpreted that as an insult to him.  Aside from being a poverty mindset ("My people have to back me up no matter what."), it also betrayed Marshall's inability to discern the motives of others.

I doubt if TO understands, even now, why he got exiled to the Bills.  Two seasons ago (his last at Dallas) he was asked about leadership on the Cowboys.  What he said was (paraphrasing), "One of us makes a play."  He could not understand that leadership and catching a pass are two very different things.  He was only able to understand "leadership" in terms of his own performance and his own ego...hence his inability to work with others or truly understand why his behavior was destructive.  His IQ is clearly high enough to function, but his emotional intelligence is a glaring problem.

It might be possible to have sympathy for these guys.  Consider...a guy like TO has been a star since junior high.  He went to college as a priviledged mercenary and he has never held a job in his adult life.  His looks and money have insulated him from the need to develop real adult relationships....

....except that a number of young men with similar cultural and social backgrounds go through the same experience and yet still become mature adults.

The concentration of emotional midgets at the wide receiver position is striking.   It is more striking when compared with...say...offensive linemen.  Since there are a lot more offensive linemen than wide recievers, we would expect more jerks.  The opposite is true.

Offensive linemen don't generally have the capacity to make more than a million dollars a year, or multi-year 15 million dollar contracts. I think that has a lot to do with the offensive linemen being (no pun intended) better grounded than wide receivers.

The other reason would be that members of an offensive line are better inclined to be part of a team, since they have to work together as a unit. Granted they're all part of the same team and need to work together, but these 5 men work much more closer together than a wide receiver who works alone, per se. I hope I worded that analogy correctly...

ok, can I ask an odd question? Why are the same teams always in the same leagues? Is it a country zonal thing?

Would it be possible to run a league system, with 2 divisions, relegation & promotion? It might give other/lower teams something more to play for   :?

Just some random thoughts...

I agree.  I think that offensive linemen are more grounded than wide receivers.  Part of it, I believe, is that big men have to develop more more emotional intelligence as they grow up. (Except that today's wide receivers are also big men. Hmm.)  I suspect that a league-wide IQ test would reveal that offensive linemen are also the most intelligent group.

A million dollars is still enough money to do drugs, drink in nightclubs, slap your girlfriend, get caught carrying an illegal gun and put your fist through a TV set.  And yet...offensive linemen don't seem to do it in the same percentages.

"Offensive linemen don't generally have the capacity to make more than a million dollars a year, or multi-year 15 million dollar contracts"

Left tackles make a huge amount of money... Good O linemen get paid better than most receivers imo. Premier linemen get paid better (generally) than everybody but premier QB's and Defensive Ends. Because the league becomes more and more pass friendly the O line is even more crucial (if that's possible) than before as the QB needs every second possible. Defensive ends make stupid money because of this. Even the marginal ones.

"Why are the same teams always in the same leagues? Is it a country zonal thing?"

Yes, it's a zonal thing and tradition but they change once in a great while when new teams come into the league. Competition is affected and it can feed weak teams into the playoffs sometimes but overall everyone's happy. -Rivalry would be lost in another system I think- None of the big US sports has what you describe, "a league system, with 2 divisions, relegation & promotion? It might give other/lower teams something more to play for"[/u]
