I just received the following e-mail:

Metro Detroit Gamers regrets to inform all of the fans of our WinterCon Events that WinterCon 2012 is cancelled. Our efforts to run the gaming convention were stymied by a lack of a suitable event space being available to the MDG organization within our typical desired WinterCon time frame.
Rest assured that MichiCon 2013 is going to happen and plans are under way to secure a convention venue. MDG will keep you informed with further updates as they become available.

It seems a lot of conventions are finding convention space tight. Locally, Texicon almost wasn't put on this year because they waited so late to find a spot.  I've heard a few other conventions having that problem.  Odd that MDG waited so late to secure a spot.  The NTRPG Con always books ours a year in advance just to prevent this very problem.

The word 'round these parts is that MDG thought they had secured their usual spot (the Oakland University student center), but the university gave them late notice that it had double-booked the place and tried to bump them into a smaller venue.

I saw this a few weeks ago and it was very disturbing. MDG has been holding conventions at OU for 30 years...it is very odd that all of sudden there was a problem and they got bumped. Wintercon is one of the oldest conventions in the country and to miss a year is a real bummer. It is a shame that something could not have been thrown together - even just a Saturday only event.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!
