Group Unveils Satan Statue Design for Oklahoma - ABC News

Glad to be back… but only for a brief layover as I'm swamped with work, family and Jiu Jitsu training these days.

My daughter just turned 5 in november so as she gets closer to gaming age I'll prolly visit more frequently. I'll try to stop in occasionally. I have been lurking a little.

Cheers,
D

Nah.  It's easy for a trained eye to tell Erol didn't do this piece.  Note these subtle details:

1. The demon is not 18 feet tall and isn't shooting lightning bolts out of its eyes
2. It doesn't have glowing purple, green, and yellow scales
3. The little girl is not casting a fireball at it
4. The little boy is not hacking at it with a giant battle axe

Just to name a few.

The lack of any awesomeness whatsoever is striking.

I like the quote in the article:
Lucien Greaves said in a statement. "The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation."

I just don't see Satan as a "sit in my lap" kind of guy unless there is pointy thing that suddenly impales people you know where whenever they try.   8O   Maybe Satan just standing with a pitchfork with a ring of flames around him would work better.   :?

Amusing article..  I would imagine that they will have to remove the 10 commandments state or they will have to put up this statue;)

Thats the Christian view, not necessary the Satinists view.. and besisde a statue like that would be considered "inappropriate".. just as a statue showing childen and babies dying in the Great Flood of Noahs Ark story.. not to mention how on earth the repopulating the planet based on a couple of close family member that survived..

In Oklahoma?  Not this decade.  Eventually perhaps, but not anytime soon.   8)

Be interesting to see.. the court case will be interesting to watch.. We want to put this innocent statue up as the Christians got to put up theirs.. Nope you can't do it as its Offensice?.. How?.. The Christians say so.. Oh well that staue is offense to us.. we aren't taking it down..  Oh so everything they say is offence is wrong then? Are you saying that we can celebrate your religion by putting up a statue exactly the same way the Christians have done? Are you giving preference over one religion over another? Isn't there something in the Constitution about that?  .. ummm.. Oh good, when can we put the statue up then?

It's a little more complicated than that.   8)

Hope not to get bogged down in religious argument.. but why isn't it that simple? I think thats what the argument will be, it will be a constitutional one, and I will imagine the constution will win with religious freedom and the removal the statue from public property.. like I said it will be amusing, which is what its all about;)

This argument could get religious, but the state will argue that the ten commandments have relevance because it's a foundational document for our justice system similar to the way that people can argue that the Christians and the church founded modern science (Francis Bacon and others).   8O  There's not nearly as much "evidence" that the Satanic statue has anything to do with the creation of the US justice system.  That's likely how proponents of the ten commandments statue will try to frame the situation. They'll also argue that the ten commandments statue is not created as a religious device, although it will certainly be that for lots of people in Oklahoma.  In other words, the religious people will try to make it a non-religious statue in the courts even though it has to do with religion too, especially in the public arena.  I understand this argument has been successful (so far) in other states, Alabama I believe.

I am surprised opponents of the ten commandments statue did not try to erect a moment with the Code of Hammurabi, The Hindu Vedas, the Quran (Koran), or the Analects of Confucius.  However, I guess the problem with that is there isn't a lot of evidence that these specific documents influenced the American justice system while there is evidence that people who valued the Bible (even though they disagreed in its interpretation and differed in how it should be followed), often used it to justify the way American laws were designed.

And I realize that the American justice system could be viewed as a modified form of systems and practices in Europe, but even the European system owes a lot to church and/or Biblical influences much more than any other historical judicial system.  And I think it could be argued that justice systems have some universal components, but I just don't see those getting very far in American courts right now with this situation.  Eventually maybe, and maybe soon in other states, but not in Oklahoma anytime soon in my opinion.   8)

Many things strike me as interesting here (mind you, I am studying religion in UChicago right now!):

1. The representation of Satan seems somewhat childish; the guy that drew that clearly played D&D at some point in his life. The hands' gestures seem more Egyptian than Satanist (which emanates from Abrahamic traditions). Satan as a goat is more Medieval than biblical. BTW, the pitchfork thing? The red thing? Horns? All medieval also.
2. If Satan represents freedom from religion, why would you need a place to 'contemplate' him or with him? That seems more pro-religion than anti-religion to me. 'True' Satanism is about anti-establishment. A monument is anti-Satanist.
3. Why is the boy facing front and all we see is the girl's back? The girl seems to be praying (again, churchy), why?. The boy seems African-American (heck, he looks like a young Obama to me!; no disrespect meant there, NSA...), why? So, Satanists are black males and women? Wow, now there's a statement for whitey! Seems more KKK than Satanist.

FYI: Satanism, or the Satanic Church, is all about publicity and money. Anton LaVey was a trickster (just like the original Satan - the shatan of the Hebrew Bible, the being God sent to 'trick' the faithful; read the Book of Job), no different than more current sect leaders. This sort of crap is right up their alley.

If I had to bet, I would bet that the Ten Commandment monument will come down eventually; not because of this stupid goat on a throne, but because of the ACLU lawsuit, which to be honest, I agree with (and I am Christian). Religion has no 'official' place in government, even if historically it has been ever present. I agree with benjoshua: the Ten Commandments are foundational to the country itself, but it clearly shows a religious preference no matter how you slice it. And that's problematic, IMHO. We'll see.

Hector.

I don't think the Satanic Church is actually a Satinic Church.. it looks to be more like an anti-religious group (Athiest Group)

and just for fun..

Churcho68,

I find your statement very interesting.  Looks like you have proved that the Church of Satan is truly a church/religion:  "FYI:  Satanism, or the Satanic Church, is all about publicity and money".  Exactly the same for the Catholic church, the Baptist (think megachurches), the Mormon Church and so forth.  Congrats.

For those interested, I will be taking bets on which is built first -- the Satanic Statue in Oklahoma or the Gygax Memorial in Lake Geneva.  Seems to me like pretty even odds, there.
