As I have continued to collect some of the rare modules, I have yet to come across the R series pre-publication modules.  Can someone please elaborate on how often and where they might see these come up for sale?  I see that only a handful of the R1-R3 modules have been accounted for.  Do the pre-publication versions differ much if at all from the versions available for sale at the various GenCon conventions?  I am definitely intrigued by their history and the information provided in the Acaeum index is not very extensive.  Thanks in advance for your answers and information.  Cheers.

There are a number of members here who have the R-series prepubs, and of course exTSR, who wrote them, is around here from time to time.

Personally, I've been looking for copies for a number of years now.  I haven't seen any come up.

Bets bet would maybe be the occasional Treasure Trove auction, GenCon's auction, or a private appreach to one of the big collectors or the author himself with a generous offer to encourage them to part with such items from their collections.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

We sold a few -- don't remember how many -- at each of those early cons.

It was in the spirit of the original C1 & C2 bagged versions from the late '70s.
Being a collector/accumulator (even then), I produced them for the collectors' aftermarket.
Some folks didn't think the RPGA would last, or that these would become collectible.
I don't even have copies. I wanted them all in the hands of the public, as long-term rewards (money time-bombs) for those with faith.

But finding one? Good luck. Nobody seems to want to sell theirs.
Some of the hardcores here might show you theirs, but...

My friends Dave & Gary made a quantum leap in entertainment. Remember them.

Mine are still sealed, so technically I couldn't show them. As Bracton has pointed out to me, how do I really know what's inside there?

Hey Bill,

Are you still working Saturday morning?

loose leaf pages inside the envelopes, so fortunately no staples.

Thank you all for the replies and the information.  Do the pre-publication versions play the same as the later releases?  Were they all originally sealed in envelopes?  I see that these were numbered.  Is the numbering on the envelope and/or the actual module in the envelope?  I would think that the pricing on Acaeum may be quite low based on the rarity of these items.  I have seen Lost Tamoachan sell for quite a bit more than the pre-publication R series modules and it does not appear to be nearly as rare..

Tamoachan (and his little brother Inverness) simply just trade more often than the R series pre-pubs, therefore you will see more price increases more often.  I imagine the next time one of the R-series pre pubs is up for sale the prices will jump dramatically as several deep pocketed collectors have these on there want list  :)

The numbering is on the envelope.
The prices listed on the acaeum are based on actual sales. If there are no new sales the data can be old and not reflective of the current enviroment. As an example, there are two Author copies of Ghost Tower of Inverness. I have both of them. I acquired them circa 1996 & 1997. Whatever price is listed on the Acaeum is not a gauge of their value, or what price it would take to buy them from me, it is merely the last data available. I don't think Scott intended for those numbers to be a price guide, although they often function as such.

Or so you think. Someone might have packed a staple in there by accident. It could be breeding in there. Staples are hermaphrodites.

So, if anyone reading this happens to have an R series prepub, feel free to PM me directly, without alerting any other "deep pocketed collectors".  Thank you.

I have reasonably deep pockets, but I find you still need to fold the modules at least twice to get them to fit. Backpacks are better.

I sold one off several years ago, R4. I don't think it was technically a prepub; Frank said it was one rolled off his old printer. It was on the old printing paper, the type where the sheets are all connected and fed with rollers with knobs on them. I know what it is called but it is late....... Anyways it was a huge folded stack.
