Does anybody recall the retail price of the first edition Player's Handbook.  I seem to recall $12, but want to verify.

I paid $12 retail each for my PH and my MM at Youngtown (all inclusive kids store; toys, clothes, etc.) in 1981. The DMG was $15 and I could not afford it because my paper route only earned me $26 a month. My younger brother went in on it with me for $8 and since he owned more than half of the book he wrote his name in giant highlighter letters inside the front cover. S1 Tomb of Horrors cost me $4.70 IIRC - that was my first module purchase - talk about a trial by fire!

Definitely the price I paid. Remember this was a local kids department store at a shopping mall. I am sure the mark-up was a lot higher than Sears.

My original DMG (Efreet cover) has a price tag on the first page inside the cover: $10.25 from aafes (army and air force exchange service). IIRC, my dad (a navy reserve officer) bought this at an exchange store in the spring of '83, and surprised me with it.  

I also recall getting the Fiend Folio on sale at Kaybee Toys for $1 around the same time. My other hardbacks were all holiday gifts and don't have tags so I don't know the prices or where they were bought.

I did most of my TSR shopping at a hobby shop (model train type stuff - the kind of place that briefly carried D&D bitd, but doesn't anymore).

I know one of the core hardbacks, original cover, was $10 in about 1983.  I don't think they were all the same price though.  I want to say either 8/10 or 10/12.  I think the larger DMG would have been the more expensive one.

from time to time I run across the various manuals on ebay and notice the original price stickers. I thought I'd just save this for posterity too. A MM from Toys R Us for $8.94.

That sounds about right. I bought my PHB in 1981 or 82 for (if I recall) about £4.95 (ish)...
