What are peoples thought about posting want lists?

one school of thought is not too.. people know what you are after and bid up the prices, or may not even know of a particular items existence and so have more people looking for a particular item..

It just I am coming to some pointy ends in my collecting...

Good topic, I was just thinking about this the other day, especially regarding very rare items. I only don't like the want lists or wanted to buy ads for extremely rare items. I don't see how that really works at all. Someone sees the add and is like sure I'll sell it out of the blue. Doubtful.

I would tend to think wants lists make people more aware of other items that they didn't know about as opposed to making them spiteful and drive your bids up. Seems like too much work. lol

I don't see how want lists for common items would really affect someone's collecting habits IMO.

I like it when people post want lists as a seller because I sometimes have a group of things I want to sell, but I just haven't had time to list it.  I also have items that I am willing to sell for the right price.  However, and this may seem greedy, I do not think that someone who posts a want list item should expect the item to be priced according to market values AND offered when they want it AND expect it to be near mint.  My feeling is that there are three basic factors in any sale, quality, quickly, or cheaply, and the best you should expect is any two of those factors.  If you want a quality item now, don't expect a deal.  I'll sell it to you now, but there will be a mark-up.  If you don't want it, then be patient and wait.

If I were a buyer, I would not post a want list unless it was for just a few items that I had not been able to find for years and years and really wanted those items.  And I would pay the mark up.  If you want a deal, don't post the want list.  If you want to finish the collection, post the want list.   8)

I have had very good success posting wants in the classified, even for some rare items :)

I would definitely post it. Worst case is that someone would list a price that you don't want to pay.

I've made a couple lazy sales this way so far, since I haven't posted a list of everything I have for sale yet. I'm still going through my extra stuff, and it's a slow process :P

I am on the side of posting it.  More often than not something may turn up.  eBay is fickle and that is where some of the high prices can come from.  I've found most of the community here (if they have extras or are wanting to pare down a collection) are really good price wise and communication.  On a side note, I will not be a competitor to your want list since you want some pretty obscure stuff!

Best of luck to you.

Go for it! I'd post a want list myself, but my collection is rather minimal at the moment and I've been steadily building it up for the time being that it isn't necessary.

If I were to make one though, there is only one particular very rare item that comes to mind. To avoid sounding like a broken record, I won't name the item. I'll just say that I would indeed pay mark up for it if offered.  :)

Of course, there's more of a chance of someone telling me to "wait in line like the rest of us" then to receive an offer for it.

It's really this that is the sticking point for me.  If it's (un)common, no big deal.  If it's rare but everyone knows about it, probably not a big deal either.  You might shake one loose, but you're not going to inflate the price of ST1 because you announce that you want one.  But the category of items where I've done my own independent digging/research, and have figured out the existence of some oddball item, no, I don't really want to announce that to the masses until I have one for myself; that'd just be shooting myself in the foot.

EDIT: I've been thinking about this more.  It seems like we might make more headway if people shared their trade/sale lists.  Sure, that might not do much for items that someone has but wouldn't really sell unless someone offered a ton, but it's a big start.

I post my want list each year for several reasons:

- I trust the people here more than all other sellers
- I'd rather Acaeum members get my money than other sellers
- Acaeum members do a better job at evaluating condition and are more likely to know what I'm looking for
- I often find that a single seller has multiple items on my list, saving me time and money (shipping)

I don't care if people know what I'm looking for.  I've got nothing to hide when it comes to my collection... furthermore, I don't really collect anything too obscure.  If I really want something, I know I have to pay for it.  Besides the same few super rares (ST1, etc.) that everyone needs, most of what I'm looking for isn't that hard to get.

Each time I've posted my want list, it's been a success.  My thanks to those who have helped me out each time.

Agree with the comments.. my list ranges from well know to almost unknown.. they are basically either mentioned once on the web or not at all.. if you do as much Googling as me and looking at sites/threads there are lots of obscure RPG's out there.. but really outside of a handful of us how many are interested in these things? how many people are really interested in things like Mortal Combat? That's a fun one. :)
IMO, if Aaron's price was ~$80 he was in a generous mood and I'm surprised it lasted that long, if so.

Ooh Ooh Me too :)

Agreed.  That would be considered one of the NK's lower price/rarity items these days.  I do remember a copy going through Ebay just a few months back - don't remember the price.  I placed a token bid (didn't win) but I do already have a copy.

Yes I do have a copy of Mortal Combat. I too have generally been loath to reveal my want lists (Crazy Egor always had my full want lists because I could trust Paul, and he found many obscure things for me over the years).
