We're very familiar with the 1981 catalog cover... stone archway with critters top & sides, open door, products beyond.
This Sutherland design was originally used for point-of-purchase displays and at least one (yellow) banner.
In the original, the door is closed and damaged; hinges & a knocker, a demonic (efreeti?) face, and a dragon's tail protruding bottom right (image below).
(Regarding the yellow Banner, it has the (R) and says "The most popular fantasy game of the decade". The Gary Gygax estate sold one (GenCon 2011) for $1026. Another sold on eBay soon thereafter (Nov 2011) for $315. I'm sure the PoP display has been sold, but don't have it recorded.)
In all, when & how was this image used? Only the two cited (PoP & yellow D&D banner), or elsewhere also?
