Twice in a one-month period, about 30 days apart...

I've had the account for over ten years and never had a problem with it.

Someone tried to change my phone number to a 512 area code (Austin, TX).

I don't have any of my financials tied to the account, so they can't steal anything of note, but it's still irritating. Fortunately Ebay has been extremely helpful in restoring my account... passwords... etc...

I use AVG as my anti-virus software. I run Firefox/No-Script/Ad-Blocker, an haven't had any virus issues in many many years.

What I have noticed recently (and I'll have to call Ebay again and let them know) is when I hit the "My-Ebay" icon in the top right corner, it takes me off the secure-server hyperlink, and to an Ebay page that asks me for my high-school mascot. So it has to be something on their end. Again... really irritating...

The most common way that accounts are hacked is by people using the same username and passwords across multiple sites. Then when one site is compromised, it's possible to get access to other sites with the same username/password combo. I get around this by having a pattern for each password that relates to the site I'm using. You could also try using 1Password, but then you're trusting them with *all* of your passwords.
