I recently acquired what seems to be a 6th alpha printing DMG (Efreet Cover, Wizard logo, orange fly-leaves and end-papers, and TSR Games on spine) and want to determine if any pages are missing. The book has 236 numbered pages. The 236th page has advertisements with an illustration of Mono S1. The first unnumbered page starts with "Encumbrance of Standard Items" table, the next unnumbered page starts with a morale table. The last page is a TSR reply card with a survey. I think there are missing pages. Can I get some help please? Thanks!

I recently packed all my stuff away so I'm not able to look. I would try Mars.

I'll try to look this weekend and let you know. It's possible the numbering changed where they numbered the encumbrance pages to 38 in the next print with the white flyleaves and still left the last two pages unnumbered.

I think your missing page 237/238.  At the bottom of page 238 it reads, "This page is perforated for easy removal and reference."

I've just come here looking for an answer to this, myself.

I have what appears to be a sixth beta with white endpapers, but the last numbered page is 236.  This is followed by a single perforated reference sheet beginning with the encumbrance list.  I've been examining the binding up close, and there's no trace of a perforated stub for a missing sheet (pages 237-238), while the perforation on the single existing reference sheet is clearly visible. The bound in survey form probably makes the difference.

I also have one on hand that checks out as a sixth gamma, without the survey but with two sheets of reference.  That extra unperforated leaf beginning with "non-player characters" has 237 and 238.  The gamma print is also a couple of mm thicker.

Are there really copies of sixth alpha and beta with both the numbered and unnumbered reference sheets and the survey?  Both of my copies have an actual page count of 240.  If the survey and both pages of reference are there at the same time, it would require an extra folio, which would probably mean a couple of blank pages at the back.

There should be a page 237/238 which has the "Non-Player Characters" at the top of page 237.  This page and the unnumbered page afterwards both state "This page is perforated for easy removal and reference" but you don't actually see the perforation.  I haven't taken one of these out so don't know if it is right in the binding itself or it is simply isn't really perforated at all.

I have had a couple books where this same page was taken out and you really can't tell.

This sixth printing copy has the survey and a single perforated sheet.  Also, it has not the slightest trace of another perforated sheet being pulled out.  There is no perforated stub, and no shreds of paper near the staple or signs of violence in there where some obsessive person could have tried to tear the stub out of the binding with tweezers.  I honestly think I would be able to tell.  This one goes to 236, has one perforated sheet, and the survey.  I'm convinced that it never contained 237 and 238, and that they were likely displaced by the survey in this printing.

It makes sense too, that the actual number of pages would be divisible by four in a book bound in signatures, unless the survey were on a separate sheet stapled to the end of the block, but I don't see any sign of that.  It's the same paper stock as the rest of the pages.

I'm repeating myself, but I don't mean to be a jerk.  I'm just trusting my eyes and my understanding of binding before taking the site's index as gospel.

Can anybody confirm a copy with 237/238, and the unnumbered ref sheet, and the survey all in the same book?

I have a copy with white endpapers that has:
* page 236 with mono ad
* "Encuberance" perforated sheet
* survey
* plain white sheet

when I looked at the photos you just posted, I couldnt tell there were orange fly leaves… it is the orange fly leaves 6th print we're talking about, right?

OP has a sixth alpha with the orange paper.  I have a beta and a gamma.  The sixth beta I have was recently given to me, and I looked it up in the Acaeum index to identify it.  Since my copy didn't have a page 238 (as the index says it should) and I saw no evidence of any page being removed, I searched the forum and found this thread.  Apart from the color of the flyleaf and endpaper, the sixth alpha and beta are stated to be identical, and since my beta appears to have never contained a page 238, I'm with OP in wondering if my copy has been expertly altered, or if the index might be in error.

Is OP really missing a page?  Does anybody have one with the survey that isn't missing that page?

Sorry this all sounds so serious.  I have some idea of what this whole discussion is worth.  A sixth printing of the DMG isn't a high dollar collector's item in any condition, but I suspect my worn sixth beta copy is at least complete with 236 as the last numbered page, and I'm curious if anybody can show otherwise.

Has this issue been resolved?

Do the 6th alpha and 6th beta prints have just the Encumbrance sheet and survey at the end and the 6th gamma have the NPC and Encumbrance sheets but no survey? It seems that lots of sellers on Ebay have the so-called missing NPC sheets in their 6th alpha and beta prints but there is no evidence of them being removed.

I also seem to be holding a 6th "something" edition.

White end papers,
236 numbered pages, page 236 is the mono ad.
followed by
1 perforated reference sheet (Encumberance of Standard Items) un-numbered
followed by
1 non perforated survey sheet, un-numbered.
followed by
The white end paper

I assumed it would be a 6th beta with a missing perforated sheet. Forensic examination, I see no evidence of a residual perforated page
