Is it possible to tell the difference between a 2nd/3rd print Tomb of Horrors and the one printed in Return to the Tomb of Horrors? The information here says they are identical, and I am certain that is correct, but what would you look for in the cover to tell the difference? Opening the module looking at the insert doesn't count. :)

I believe that the *cover* is identical to the original run's 2nd printing.  So, the only way to tell them apart is that the RttToH version should look 20 years newer ;-).

Of course I am questioning the copy I have. The cover just looks too nice. Someone has to have both the OG of modules and the return set to compare. Stock quality, looking at the print with a magnifying glass, I just keep wondering if there is some way to tell.

Ok well here they are side by side

The one on the left is from the Tome of Horrors Boxset and the one on the right is a shrink copy of 2nd print

The one from the boxset is small by about 1/8" and is noticeably more pale, the 2nd print is a more intense pink.

Looking at the pictures more closely, I see a few additional potential differences:

- the ISBN number on the original (shrink, right) appears to be closer to the bottom edge of the page (as do the product code and "Printed in the USA")
- the italic font used in the cover description blurb below the artwork appears to be a little heavier in weight/thickness than the reprint
- the reds in the reprint in front appear to be deeper when compared to the original (which looks more orangey), while the reverse is true on the back covers---the pink is lighter on the reprint when compared to the original

Jeff:  what do you think, do things look that way to your in-person eyes, or is this a possible trick of the camera, lighting, etc.?

Allan.

I know you're asking a different Jeff, Allan, but I'd like to weigh in on this.

To me it looks like all of it is lower on the front cover of the original. the wizard looks lower too and the S1 and the word "module" on top. I agree with you on your points in regards to color, etc.

Might need to look at several different copies of each to make certain that it's not a variance in how these were printed. I do wonder if they took an image from the original and didn't place it on the page exactly at the same coordinates for the reprint though.

You have a good eye Allan, besides the obvious (the color differences and height) I didn't notice the others until you pointed them out.

Was curious, and looked up my mono S1's. 1st and 3rd prints. No 2nd, and the 3rd is in sad shape.  :(  The reds are deeper in the 1st than the 3rd. Cheers

Here's an old thread about it:

How do you tell a 2nd print S1 from a 7th?

I don't think it helps if your 2nd print is in shrink though. I will have to look at my copies again.

I just realized that thread is 12 years old after rereading all the material. Um, wow.

You wouldn't really notice that until you came to this statement

FoulFoot wrote in How do you tell a 2nd print S1 from a 7th?:
The possibility of a "faked" 2nd print S1 will be very low.  There's no point in it.  Even a shrinked 1st print S1 is not worth much at all.

Boy, that's changed - I guess it could be a matter of perspective also
