Invest $8 in desiccant packets and dont be too afraid of buying something that smells like mildew. A few dozen desiccant packets can remove the mildew smell, and any extra humidity, from most any book.
Yes, the mildew smell will return if you store your books in a humid environment. Just like anything made out of fibers will. Mildew, a kind of mold, is everywhere. Everywhere. There is no avoiding it. However, you can make an environment where it isn't growing, smelling or visible.
I am not talking about a book being visibly eaten by white mold here by the way. Mildew smell only.
