New Ebay Payment system?

just got an invoice from ebay seller after an offer..

"This seller accepts payments through eBay's new managed payments experience.
PayPal is not yet available, but you can pay securely with a credit or debit card."

Anyone know about this? movement away from paypal?

I had the same thing when I went to do a "Buy it now" for something... I had zero clue what this new payment system was so I cancelled a $400 + order...just seemed odd and I wasn't comfortable just putting my card on file with something I had no idea about. Ended up paying a little more for the item from another seller that took Paypal still. Not a huge deal (to me but the original seller lost out).... but a warning/heads up might have been nice.

There is something else afoot as well:

It appears there are some new laws on collecting sales taxes for eBay!

Taxes and import charges | eBay

I just had a seller buy $17k worth of stuff and eBay charged him $1700 in sales tax! (no he does not live in my state)

If you exceed certain thresholds ($10k or 199 sales) then you have to pay sales tax to any state that chooses to collect it.

I guess now you have to register as a business in every state and track every state you sell to and either collect taxes from every purchase or eat the cost at the end of the year and submit to each state that the rules apply to.

I will add, in Mass (and I think VT) the threshold is lower...like 5K in sales. My son and a good friend got hit up for taxes in sales at 5K. Their assumption was the threshold was 20k set by the feds (no idea where the number came from, just what they said) but that each state has the "option" to set their own threshold, albeit they are surely lower than the federal standard! The work around, from what it seems for sellers, is you can provide your "purchase cost" of the item and the difference in the "sale price" to offset some of the taxes.....again, this is just from how it was explained to me, but just to make ya aware ;)
