The beholder on the cover of the Greyhawk supplement looks dumbfounded at how the fighter is holding his sword. The sword is just resting on his shoulder, he has no leverage to swing and and no idea how to use it.

I always assumed that the fighter was simply resting his sword on his shoulder while asking the beholder for directions to Hommlet ;-).

Was this illustration inspired by a comic book drawing?  The sword could have been grafted on a re-purposed figure.
