Dice collecting has become a pretty big thing...never mind new dice (Kraken, etc.). The older dice have gone crazy over the past 12 months....people are paying crazy $$....and a many of them don't play RPG's...they just like their "shinies"

Okay, wait a sec.  I have several sets of these original cheap low impact dice from the old box sets.  Most are mine that came with sets I owned and played with back then, and some that just came with sets I bought later and are still in the plastic bag with the crayon, unopened.

I'm not nearly as big into collecting as alot of the guys that hang out here are, but I do pay some attention to what's going on with this stuff and as far as I know these have never been worth much of anything on the market.  

Are my old soft plastic dice now worth hundreds of dollars?

These did have the case and paper tag, though there is a market for loose dice as well.  Some singles can sell for $50 - $100.

I couldn't believe it either, but I saw a post, checked it out, dug out some dice and within 24 hours had $1700 in my PayPal account. Probably could have done better, but I was grateful for the quick cash. It's only specific sets that are worth ridiculous cash... mostly from the Borealis line. Borealis Confetti (one of the sets I had) sells for $1000-$1200 alone. Age does matter on them as there are more recent versions that use a different type of glitter than the older ones. Apparently that style of glitter is used in the manufacture of Euros and is either restricted or cost prohibitive now. That's what ten minutes of internet research turned up anyway.  

Regardless, it may be worthwhile to check out what you've got.

I think people who dont want to play the game, but still want to be associated with its current popularity, are driving the market. Its a way to be engaged without any effort needed to understand a complex system. Its the "I think the dice are cool" approach to meeting nerd chicks.

I base this off wanting to type something as I wake up this morning.

Borealis are definitely the heavy hitters, but some others do reasonably well also. Some of the Vortex and Gemini can be pricey. There are plenty of styles sitting in the $40-$60 per set range and a fair amount in the $80-$100 range. The thing with any of the glittery dice is knowing the difference between the old glitter and the new glitter. Most of the eBay listing specifically mention "old glitter" or "OG." I'm no expert, but if it's early 2000's it should be OG. I learned a lot by perusing the Dice Market group on Facebook. I actually sold mine through a contact in that group.
