Poul Anderson and Gordon R Dickson wrote a series of light SF short stories years ago about a race of aliens that looked like teddy bears called the Hoka.
The Hoka were very impressionable and looked up to humans. In the first story, a crashed Earthman found that, after reading some westerns left by a previous mission, the Hokas had changed their society to match. Their names changed to "Tex" and "the Loneliest Ranger" and the like, and riding "hosses" to herd "cattle" (various alien lifestock on the planet.)
These are great stories and you should check them out, but the reason I'm posting about them is back in the 80's, I saw a painting up for auction at a SF convention in Virginia. The painting was a reproduction of the
1E Players manual, with all the characters replaced with Hokas, and I think that the statue in the background was a giant Hoka as well. This would have been about 1986 or 1987 or so.
I lost out on the auction but thought I saw a pic of it on the web once. Numerous later web searches haven't found anything on it. I'm looking for any info on the painting and hopefully a link to a screenshot of it.
Michael Whelan had done some art for a possible movie back then - a Hoka Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty and Napoleon, but I don't see the Dnd art on his site.
