At the Chicago Cultural Center, there's an exposition called 'Successful Failures'

It is an 'underground' art/political movement with Midwest roots. One of the pieces is heavily into D&D:

Notice the images (in the middle of the piece, on top and below the armored knight) from the PHB and the MM alongside other art work. Here's the accompanying blurb for the piece.

Notice how D&D is impacting areas beyond gaming, like the politics of the art world.

Truth is, the hold and influence that D&D has in pop culture and society in general is deep and hard to catch but it is real and impactful nonetheless. D&D through the decades waxes and wanes but remains.
