Ive been anticipating what DnD product will come out for the 50th anniversary. I have a silver anniversary set, have heard the 10th anniversary set supposedly existed, :) and I just had a glimpse that has me a bit deflated.

Wizards of the Coast makes most of their money from Magic the Gathering, and their 30th anniversary is this year. They launched a limited print booster box, with four packs, for $999. Its a pseudo-reprint of the earliest set in magic. The booster packs are randomized as usual. In other words, you could buy several of the original cards for this kind of coin, and depending on the draw, could have had $900 left over. Normal modern packs are 36 packs for about $100.

Here is the deflated part. I have a feeling I am going to have the original of anything they might reprint. I also cant see them reprinting much of the 2nd-5th edition stuff - because that would just be weird.

I went from anticipation to a complete lack of an ability to think of anything I would even want for a 50th anniversary. Any thoughts?

Auction/Raffle. Convention over a weekend, at Wizards HQ. 125 slots, sold to the highest bidders (meaning 25 DMs).

First day is a meet and greet, gaming auction, and buffet-style dinner. Cash bar.
Second day is the gaming.

DMs are the writers of the most popular adventures ever put out by TSR/Wizards/Hasbro.

Competition-style dungeon, collaboratively-written by above writers, 5 players per group. Those knocked out can tour HQ, hang out at the venue or browse vendors.
Everyone gets a regular copy of the adventure. Everyone at the last table gets the regular copy and a deluxe version of the adventure, signed by all the DMs.

Top player at the last table (voted on by ballot from all players and DMs) Gets $500.00, a certificate commemorating the event and the title of "Greatest Gamer," and a year's worth of product.

Dave, get the barbarian in the corner a drink, quick!

Maybe they make kind of a "greatest hits" with stuff reprinted from all prior editions into an anniversary set, but I think we will instead see this commemorated with the release of DnDOne (or 5.5 or 6.0).

Yeah, reprint copies of widely available product doesn't do anything for me, at this point.
The coolest thing in the Silver, I think, was L3 (witness the prices).  And the Story of TSR.

There's plenty of stuff I'd enjoy.  Various levels of effort on their part.  Nothing I'd hold my breath on them actually doing.  If older-timers like us get tossed 1 minor bone, it's about all you can expect.

Spitballing various "Premium Anniversary Box" ideas:

[*] Buy/lease the rights to Wormy from Tramp's heirs and produce the compilation he always wanted
[*] Something exactly like what Goodman is doing with their OAR reprint/background/expansion series
[*] Reprint of RPGA2 Black Opal Eye.
[*] Adventurer's Guild Module (original format or given a "standard module" presentation).
[*] An early GenCon (or other major con) tourney module, given a full presentation.
[*] BX1 the Islandia Compilation
[*] An art piece.  Maybe an iconic piece "suitable for framing".  Or better yet, a brand new piece from a classic artist, depicting something from a well-known module/rulebook, with a few sentences below explaining the scene.
[*] Any original history, documentation, photo album sort of historical/unique item.

I'll be giving dozens of autographs in Italy over the next 2 weeks.

Drop by. :)

My friends Dave & Gary made a quantum leap in entertainment. Remember them.

That sounds better than doing it at wizards. :) Two weeks sounds awesome too.
