Hey, I found the strangest signature. It's a '96 piece, appears to spell out EO, but it's not a style for which Erik Olson is known. Anyone recognize the siggy here along the bottom?

Could it be Erol Otus?  It doesn't look like his work or normal initials, though.

Yeah. That's a possibility - failing that, I should get on looking for other EOs in the trading card business back in the mid-90s.

Doesn't look too far off this EO signature...

But also note that the 'E' is exactly the same as the way Diesel signs his signature on this same item, and he was with TSR sometime back them wasn't he?

Definitely not Otus....I have many signed pieces that are not remotely close to that. To me, it looks like someone just placed it on it , maybe to mark it as "theirs." That, and the fact they have "more than 10 available"

Other scans I've seen also show the signature, Lordan. It's definitely part of the card, unless everyone is running off the same scan, which I doubt.

Does anyone have the physical card to confirm?

I do not, dbartman, but I can offer this.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/FA4AAOSw ... -l1600.jpg
This is a very definitely different picture, from SPELLFIRE - THRONE of Ice (464/4th edition) EUR 10,50 - PicClick FR

https://italiankarsus.github.io/SPELLFI ... CS/464.jpg
And this is a very definitely different scan, copied from https://spellfire.com/card/2149  (I know they're not allowed to use TSR's other trademarks, but trust me, that card's the same)

I'm pretty sure if the signature matches one scan and two different cards this perfectly, that means it was printed that way. There's no way someone was THAT precise signing their own cards, and their own cards ended up in three different scans.

Well, for $10 it must be worth buying a copy just for the little research project if you're into Spellfire.
A loupe or even a camera phone these days will tell you whether it was written on after the event or printed with the card.

International delivery goes way higher, and this isn't my only project; to pursue them that way is, indeed, living beyond my means by an order of magnitude. That's why I'm poking people here and there, hoping someone has a collection they're willing to glance at.

It seems TSR's TCGs aren't all that popular here, tho, heh. No worries, I'm spamming all over the internet, including some places without a hope in hell. Someone's bound to bite sooner or later.

On a bit of a whim I e-mailed Diesel, and he says... nope, deffo not Erol Otus or any of the other in-house artists, and he doesn't recognize the signature either.

Same signature on some other cards, too
(this one is cropped off)

** expired/removed eBay auction **

I'm sure it's Erik Olson. If you have Dragon Magazine 208, take a look at page 30 at some of his illustrations (in b&w) in that article. He used the same signature with his initials. I guess on the bigger paintings, he generally wrote his name out.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a painting of his with just initials, though, but haven't found that yet.

Found that example of a finalized painting Erik did where he only used his initials on the Gamma World revised version box set,

and also that example from Dragon 208

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

If it is an Olson, that's one even he doesn't remember, because I e-mailed him about that signature and he plain out said it wasn't one of his'. Your signature may remind him, though.

I'll try again with the full set and the sample Gamma World signature, just in case. Those two are extremely close.

I figured it out. That was not an article illustrated by Erik Olson, they misspelled Eric Olsen! I'll have to write to Eric Olsen and ask if that was him, now. I also owe Mr. Olson an apology for doubting him...

EDIT: No, they didn't misspell Eric Olsen, they spelled Eric Olson correctly, and then it appears they misspelled it as Eric Olsen, unless we have three guys now, one of them Erik Olson, one Eric Olson, and one Erik Olsen. Lucky me, Erik Olsen is a game designer from the 3e era.

That's interesting, I wouldn't have guessed that right away. There are (I think) three illustrators/contributors named David Martin. And two illustrators with the last name Horne, one is Daniel and the other is David (no relation)
