Looking at the auction there were 155 bids, including five independent bidders who were wiling to put up 10k for this. This aligns with numbers for a G-VG copy based on 2022 figures. With disinflation over the last year, that seems to reflect market conditions. In that context, $15k seems like a nice haul for the seller. Frankly, the much nicer beta, recently sold for $22K, seems like the better "deal."

The initials and name on the box and booklets were probably a big negative.  It was also a step or two down in grade from the one that was sold in 2016.  The Beta that sold in December of 2024 was not a normal set, so it's understandable that is sold for more.  It was auctioned off by The Collector's Trove, which typically increases the sales price quite a bit, and it had a special letter of provenance signed by EGG.

Asking prices don't equate to sales prices.  There are plenty of overly ambitious asking prices on eBay.  :)

The recent D&D Heritage Auction that just ended Jan 16th, paints a healthy market for graded sales. I took the liberty of posting the top 18 graded module sales. You'll notice that the 15 of the top 18 were all in shrink. From a purely investment standpoint, paying $20 to get a module graded really has the potential for a huge return on that investment.

You’re right, it definitely appears to be a different audience than the typical eBay audience. Perhaps these are collectors without the knowledge to determine authenticity and rely on professional grading to mitigate the risk on their purchases. Maybe grading is making our hobby more mainstream and accessible?

The total value of this January 16th Heritage auction exceeeded the previous auction from last August and yet there was roughly 20% less items submitted. It will be interesting to see if these returns keep increasing in further Heritage auctions.

For those who are not familiar with Heritage, they do charge a 20% premium on top of the final bids. However, even backing out the buyer’s premium, the returns were impressive.
