Something I think about fairly often. What's the greatest game ever invented? I'd like to see your opinions on the subject. Not talking about sports either, like table tennis or pool. I'm talking about games you sit down at a table and play with one or more other people.

Of course, OD&D has to be right up there, but the greatest ever, IMO, may be chess. Not always my favorite to play (especially against my wife or son), but it certainly is a great game.

For me it is Risk. No question.

When I was a kid....probably Wahoo or dominoes. Later in grade school/jr. high I really got into Dark Tower and then Trivial Pursuit in high school.

But now, besides D&D obviously, it is most definitely Risk.

Besides those that have been already mentioned and although it can become very tedious sometimes, Monopoly has got to be in the discussion somewhere.

Settlers of Catan is the winner.

If you have not played Settlers you are missing out. One of the best games ever made and it started a whole new "designer game" industry.

Games can get you through times of no money but money can not get you through times of no games!!

Settlers is a good game and definitely brought attention to German boardgames but I usually can't stand to play it - the negotiation phase can make it very unbalanced.

I do play a fair bit of Puerto Rico (standard edition or with some of the buildings from the expansion mixed in).

Never played it myself. Looks fun though. Reminds me of Pente a bit. Nolan Bushnell used a move from the game Go as the name of his new company, Atari, back in 1972. There's some trivia for you.

In the 80's you couldn't attend any sort of party or family event without someone pulling out a Trivial Pursuit game. It's the only tabletop game I have any chance of winning on a consistent basis and in fact have only lost a handful of games played out of 100's. I don't see it played as much but it's still by far my favorite as in most cases luck plays a smaller part than in most tabletop party games. I have half a dozen different versions in the house as well as all the card sets every produced. I think I read somewhere it' s the 2nd most printed game of the 20th century (behind monopoly)

I would believe this. Every value village or goodwill store seems to always have a couple copies for sale. It is a great Canadian produced game

It was a small attempt by the Canadian government to mandate a certain amount of Canadian content (hockey trivia and interesting tourist information) by which to educate the world about Canada (and to increase the popularity of hockey and increase Canadian tourism).

My mother is obsessed with obtaining every edition of Trivial Pursuit. We play if all the time with like 40 card boxes on the table... unfortunately it replaced D&D as our family-get-together game.
