This a copy of a very rare miniature painted for an Acaeum member here on the boards.  I believe the mini was limited to 100 copies and was never released to the public making this a very rare piece.

The girl is added for some "color"  The rare mini is the actual Ogre.  The base, grass, water effects  etc are built from scratch.

It is very delicate being an old lead mini.  Painted by my wife Saxonangel I thought I would post this and share with the board.

Blackmoor, reminds me of when I met you at the NTRPG Con last year, the first thing I said to you was "Oh, your wife is the painter!  I love her stuff!"  I do appreciate you for yourself, just wanted you to know.  But still wonderful to have a look at the intricacy and evocativeness of her work.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much for posting this. I've been meaning to post some pics for ages but just hadn't got around to it.

I bought the mini as part of the Sutherland auctions run by Paul Stormberg way back when.... 5, 6, 7 years ago maybe. The mini was sculpted by Dave for TSR back in the day but never made it past the prototype stage - as far as I am aware not that many were produced, and TSR didn't put it into mass production or release it for sale.

I loved the sculpt, and was very happy to win the auction. I think there were so many great Sutherland items up for sale at the time so I managed to win it for a great price.

I sat on it for ages, wondering what to do with it. Eventually I decided something needed to be done about getting it painted - I didn't want the job myself, I can paint minis to a reasonable standard for the tabletop but I knew I couldn't do the ogre justice.

After seeing some af Angela's work shown off here on the Acaeum by Jeff, I decided to approach her to see if she would take on the job. To my delight, she agreed to take on the project ( I don't think Angela takes many commissions, so I was very glad when she agreed to this one). I wanted Angela to do the job for two reasons - firstly, she is one of the most talented mini painters there is; anyone who has seen her work would agree with that I'm sure. Secondly, she is a D&D player - most painters seem to be involved with Warhammer or other minis systems, so I felt Angela had the right background. And with Jeff an active member here it felt like it sealed the deal for me.

Angela and I spent some time emailing about paint schemes etc, and for that I went to the AD&D Monster Manual. There wasn't much info to be had, but I used what it said and tried to keep it authentic. With the diorama, the manual indicated Ogre Mages raid human settlements for loot and slaves, so we added a small treasure chest and a buxom slave girl to the mix.

Angela did an absolutely amazing job - after the initial discussions, she made a number of suggestions that really fit the scuplt. Apart from her painting talents, her creativity and flair really made the figure into a masterpiece. For instance, I would never have picked turquiose for the cloak - but she suggested it would be a good fit for the red laquer armour and blue hair. The result turned out fantastic, especially with the gold trim and embossed flowers.

I think no D&D collection is complete without a Saxon Angel mini. Thanks again Jeff for setting it up for me, I really appreciate it.

Thank you for sharing the ogre's background. For us miniature geeks, it's very cool to see a model like this one (rare, unreleased to the general public, etc).

Do you happen to have any pics of the beast before it was painted? Is is a multi-part mini, or was it cast in one piece? Do you know or recall what kind (if any) hallmarks it might have had on the base? Dave's signature, TSR, a date, things of that nature?

Dave Sutherland actually sculpted 2 minis of this type. According to Stever Winter at the Con this year, there were about 100 made of each and were only sold to TSR employees internally. Steve bought his for $1.00 each at that time about ~25 years ago (no clue as to the real date).

In any case, Steve donated BOTH minis to the Con !!!!

So, I gave them to Jeff to see if Angela would be willing to paint them both... she said yes ...

So, if Jeff can take some photos of them before they are painted (since I don't have them now) that would be nice.... if you are reading this Jeff.

Once Angela is done (no rush) I am sure we'll have another nice piece to view.
