So Mark/Mars and I have talked on and off for awhile now about migrating the contents of the Tome site and forums into an Acaeum sub-web so that it can be more-easily preserved, given the degrading-slowly stability of the Tome’s site software.

If this is something that Mark and I can get permission to do from the Tome contributors:

1.  Is this even possible/feasible to do?
2.  Would we work with Scott or someone else on this?
3.  What other issues/considerations would need to be hashed out?

A few quick thoughts --

1) I don't have any problem with it, but you'd of course need to get permission from the site's owners.

2) The "main" site pages are just HTML, so those would be fairly easy to bring over; it would mostly be "theming" work -- adding navigation links, changing some basic formatting, etc.

3) The forums -- where most / all of the community-generated content lies -- would be a massive effort.  I don't think there's any script programming that could help, either; since it's organized in forum threads, you'd have to manually parse and combine the info of every thread into cohesive webpages.  Probably thousands of them.  

4) If it's just preservation of the existing forum messages, then it could feasibly be upgraded from phpBB 2.0.22 to phpBB 3.0.14 and then to phpBB 3.2.  That would at least import the threads into something more modern (and supported), though it would still look and operate pretty much identically to how it is now.

I think unless you (and probably several of you) have a lot of time and determination on your hands, your best bet is to pursue the preservation angle rather than trying to convert it all into something better.  I'm happy to host the HTML pages here, in a subweb.  The forum would need to be converted to something more modern, as phpBB 2.0.22 won't run on PHP 8 that we have installed here.

So the Tome is down again, and Mark’s checking with support on options to upgrade and restore the site, as well as what backups may be available.
